Lorenzo Antonio Hunt
August 5, 2020
CHARLOTTE – Lorenzo “AL” Antonio Hunt, 77, of Charlotte, passed away on August 5, 2020. Born in Queens, NY, on July 31, 1943, he was a son of the late Jose and Margurite Hunt.
In addition to his parents, “AL” was preceded in death by his brothers, Jose Antonio Hunt, Jr. and Roberto Antonio Hunt.
He attended Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio on a basketball scholarship, where he achieved the third highest all-time scorer, with 1404 total points. Not only a collegiate athlete, AL obtained an undergraduate degree in education at Otterbein College followed by a graduate degree later in life from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. After serving in the US Air Force from 1961 to 1965, AL worked as an educator, coach, and administrator for more than 30 years. He cherished his time as head basketball coach for Marion Franklin High School, where he coached 18-year NBA Veteran, Herb Williams, as well as leading the team to a second-place finish in the state tournament. An avid basketball fan, AL was a season ticket holder for the Charlotte Hornets, and he enjoyed time spent watching sports and talking about basketball with his son, Dameon.
He was a faithful member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte. When AL was younger, he loved to fish and camp, and he had a natural talent for working with his hands doing various building projects. He will be remembered as a “really nice guy” with a great sense of humor, whom many times added at the end of a task, “Its good enough for government work”.
Those left to remember AL’s memory include his fiancée, Mindell “Micki” Penn; his son, Dameon Hunt, and his wife Shay, and their children, Kennedy, Bishop and Deacon, all of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Ruth Hunt, half-brother, Maurice Hunt, and his wife Barbara; nieces, Donna Hunt of NJ, Alicia Nappo and Laura Hunt of Upstate NY, and nephews, Ricardo Scott and Ricardo Jose Hunt of Upstate NY.
Services for AL will be private.
Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

My father worked at Otterbein for almost 40 years and I grew up essentially on the campus. My 2 brothers and I never missed a game at the old Alumni gym and Lorenzo was our favorite player during his time there. He was a supremely talented player on some very good teams. I also remember seeing him a few times on campus and saying "hi" (which was like saying "hi" to an NBA star to the 8-year old me). He always took time to speak with me and made me feel like a million bucks.
I'm so sorry to hear of his death but gratified to see the wonderful life he created for himself and his beautiful family. I also live in Charlotte and wish I'd known he was here - I bet we were at some of the same Hornets games. -
Lorenzo was my brother-in-law. I'm grateful for the memories of his visits. I'm grateful he found love in his life with Mindell. I'm especially happy that he had Jesus. He was extremely proud of his son Dameon and loved him and his family very much. I like to imagine him hanging out with his brothers in heaven. I miss you and will see you again in heaven.
