Rovy Frost Branon, Jr.

October 14, 2026

Rovy Frost Branon, Jr., passed away on October 14, 2026, with his wife Susan by his side.

Frost was born on May 10, 1942, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Carol Christine Mooney and Rovy Frost Branon, Sr. He attended school in Charlotte, graduating from Myers Park High School in 1960. Frost was awarded the Jefferson Standard Scholarship and began his higher education at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. While there, he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity as well as the Manager of WUNC radio station, where he also had a show called “Jazz On The Hill.” He graduated in 1964 with degrees in Political Science and Radio, TV and Motion Pictures. Frost continued his education, earning a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1967.

Frost began a long career in communications and employment law at the FCC in Washington, DC. He went on to become the North Carolina attorney for Southern Bell and eventually joined the legal department of the BellSouth Corporation, where he became the Appellate Attorney and spent much time in DC at the Court of Appeals, having been sworn in to the court in 1975. He was sworn in to the Supreme Court of Georgia in 1969. Frost was sworn in to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1986. Frost was a Certified Mediator and Arbitrator in North Carolina and a Final Agency Decision Writer. He had a solo law practice as an employment attorney. He was an attorney for the USPS as an attorney for the Southeastern states. Frost taught Continuing Legal Education for years and a class at Georgia State University early in his career. Frost was on various committees in the North Carolina and American Bar Associations.

Frost was a true lifelong Tarheel and treasured his days in Chapel Hill. Frost was a voracious reader, a published poet, an award-winning photographer, and a lover of jazz and classical music. He was a world traveler, having gone to Beijing, China, twice as a business negotiator for BellSouth, as well as many wonderful trips in the States and abroad with his wife Susan.

He was a deeply philosophical and spiritual man and forever grateful for his experience at All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, where he was a member with his wife Susan and his stepsons. Later, he returned to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte, where he and his wife Susan were married in 1984.

Frost was so very accomplished academically and professionally, but his greatest accomplishment was his loving kindness and the beautiful poetry that was always in his heart that he readily shared.

Frost was predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Hasty Branon; stepsons, Christopher Bailey and John Bailey, and their wives and children. He is also survived by his sister, Martha Edwards, and brother-in-law, Wallace Edwards, and their children and grandchildren.

He is also survived by three sons from his first marriage: Henry Branon, Wesley Branon, and Rovy Branon.

A private gathering to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.

Frost was a friend and gentleman. I will remember him with affection. He was an exceptional attorney, admired for his professionalism and dedication, but above all, he was a devoted husband whose love for his wife was truly special. It was a privilege to have known him, and he will be deeply missed. My condolences to Susan and his family.
