Edwin Scott Trotter

September 26, 2026

CHARLOTTE – Edwin Scott Trotter, 83, of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

Scotty, as he was known, was born in Charlotte on October 14, 1942.  He was the second of three sons of James Thomas Trotter and Dorcas Elizabeth Boyette.  Scotty grew up in Charlotte and attended the Blue Ridge School for Boys and Myers Park High School.  He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the SAE fraternity, the baseball team and the football team.

A talented golfer, Scotty attended Q-school and was a golf pro in Birmingham, AL, after graduation.  He later moved back to Charlotte and married Rebecca (“Becky”) Rogers, with whom he had one son.  A fashionable couple, Becky and Scotty owned and operated the clothing boutique Logan Scott.

Scotty then began what would be a remarkably successful career in residential real-estate development.  Along with his brother Johnny, Scotty played a pivotal role in developing DeBordieu Colony in Georgetown, SC.  Later, he worked closely with environmental conservationists to develop the adjacent land into the neighborhood known as Prince George.  These neighboring communities constitute a fitting legacy for Scotty, who had a deep and abiding love for the South Carolina Lowcountry.

In 1987, he married Katherine (“Katy”) Close, with whom he had four children.  The family spent their summers in DeBordieu, where they moved full time in 1997.  In retirement, Scotty moved to the mountains of North Carolina, eventually settling back in Charlotte.

Scotty was an incredible athlete; after playing both football and baseball at UNC, he was a passionate Tar Heel fan for the rest of his life.  At home, Scotty spent his time cooking and listening to music, frequently introducing his kids to bands and restaurants they had never heard of.  He was also a talented artist, spending lots of time painting in his studio and working on his photography.  By far his greatest joy, however, was his five children, to whom he was a devoted father. He was surrounded by family in his final days.

Scotty is survived by his five children, Logan Trotter (Irene), Kingsley McNeil (Fletcher), Bess DuBose (Hill), Sophie Stanwick (Wells), and Edwin Scott Trotter, Jr.; his nine grandchildren, Logan, Claudia and Christian Trotter, Annie and George McNeil, Bill and Frances DuBose, and Freddie and Wells Stanwick; his younger brother, John Boyette Trotter (Jenks); his niece, Marty Pizzo (Tommy); and nephew, John Scott Trotter (Katy).  He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, James Thomas Trotter, Jr.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Manna Food Bank of Western North Carolina, 99 Broadpointe Drive, Mills River, NC 28759.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606.  Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
