LaVon was born in Gibsonville, North Carolina to the late Marion (Mack) Lynn McCurry and the late Mary Stallings McCurry on October 16, 1939. She married the late Rev. Dr. Thomas Ralph Sigmon on September 4, 1960 in Hickory, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Claremont Central High School (now Hickory High School) and also achieved a Business Certificate from Lenoir Rhyne University.
LaVon retired from Charlotte Mecklenburg School System in 1989 after serving in various assistant teaching and administrative roles throughout Mecklenburg County. She was also active in lay ministry for over 50 years throughout the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. In her ministry she generously shared her own unique gifts while also actively supporting her husband Tom’s ordained ministry.
She is best remembered for her love and care for others. She loved to travel with family and friends, enjoying the destinations, but enjoying more the time and fellowship with those she loved. She loved with intent and intensity, always ready to give a hug and eager to receive one. Her generosity with her love was an example for all.
LaVon is survived by her children Mary Beth Smart and her husband Mike of Gastonia and William Thomas Sigmon and his wife Elizabeth of Charlotte; her Grandchildren Matthew Alan Klingaman and his wife Lacey of Gastonia, Jennifer Elizabeth Thrift of Gastonia, Marshall William Sigmon of Charlotte, and Jordan Elizabeth Sigmon of Georgetown, Kentucky; and her great-Grandchildren Kamryn Elizabeth Thrift of Gastonia, Ryder James Klingaman of Gastonia and Carter Thomas Klingaman of Gastonia.
