Ann Johnston Timberlake
August 12, 2026
Ann Johnston Timberlake, 91, died on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at the Stewart Health Center of the Cypress of Charlotte. She was born, along with her identical twin sister, in Charlotte, NC on September 5, 1934 to Rufus Murray and Virginia Reid Johnston. Ann grew up on North Tryon Street and graduated from Central High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While at Carolina, she was a member of Tri Delta sorority and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After college, Ann worked for First Union National Bank in Charlotte and later as a flight attendant for American Airlines in Dallas.
Ann was an active member of Myers Park United Methodist Church. For years, caring for the toddlers on Sunday mornings brought her joy and enabled her to build relationships with many church families. She shared her infectious smile and warmth while delivering Friendship Trays in our community for decades. Ann cherished the fun and fellowship of playing bridge weekly with dear friends through the years.
Above all, Ann was devoted to her family. She was a nurturing, encouraging, and supportive mother, who held high expectations for her children and taught integrity by example. In addition to being a Tarheel, Ann loved Davidson College, a feeling she passed down to both of her children, who became Wildcats and had transformational experiences as Davidson students. Ann was a sweet and generous grandmother who brought ice cream cakes on birthdays, sherbet on sick days, and chocolate on regular days. Travelling with family was one of her greatest joys.
Ann and her twin Ginny shared a remarkable closeness throughout their lives, which culminated in their living next door to each other at the Cypress of Charlotte for the last fourteen years. The twins shared morning coffee in their bathrobes, evening dinners with special friends, and late-night Netflix together. The family would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to the outstanding staff of the Cypress for their kindness and compassion.
In addition to her parents, Ann was predeceased by her husband, Frank Timberlake, and her brother, Latta C. Johnston. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Horn; her son, Rufus Timberlake of Portland, OR; her daughter, Grey Timberlake Brownlow, and Grey’s husband, Robbie; and her grandchildren, Reid, Jane, and Mac Brownlow.
