Carol Leckie passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born and raised in Statesville, North Carolina, Carol was the daughter of the late Charles Whitfield and Rosemary Mills Leckie. She was also preceded in death by her brother, William (Bill) Leckie, and sister-in-law, Brenda.

Carol graduated from Cool Spring High School and earned her degree in Elementary Education from Lenoir-Rhyne College. She devoted her professional life to education, serving the children of Horry County Schools for decades as an elementary school and Reading Recovery teacher. Her patience, encouragement, and dedication helped countless students develop confidence in themselves and a love of learning. Teaching was never simply her profession; it was her calling.

While Carol's impact on her students was immeasurable, she was equally known for her deep love of the beach, music, and dance. After visiting the Grand Strand with her family throughout her childhood, she followed her heart to Horry County to begin her teaching career and quickly made it her lifelong home. A passionate ambassador for the Carolina Shag, Carol became a beloved figure in the dance community. She cherished the friendships she made through shagging and considered her induction into the Shaggers Hall of Fame one of the highlights of her life. She often reflected that her years at the beach and on the dance floor brought her lasting joy and many treasured friendships.

Carol leaves behind a small but devoted family who loved her dearly and will miss her deeply. She also leaves behind an extended family of former students, fellow educators, dancers, and friends who held a special place in her life.

She lived a full life centered on the things that brought her the greatest happiness: helping others, spending time at the beach, dancing, and building lasting relationships. Along the way, she touched countless lives through her kindness, generosity, and unwavering encouragement.

While we will miss Carol tremendously, we are grateful for the memories she leaves behind and the many ways she made our lives better. Her legacy lives on in the students she inspired, the friendships she nurtured, and the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable life.
