Coy Edgar Shields, Sr.

August 4, 2026

CHARLOTTE – Respected Builder, Beloved Mentor, and Devoted Family Man, Coy Edgar Shields Sr., 91, passed peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.  He was born on March 17, 1935, in Winston Salem, NC to Oscar Melvin Shields and Carrie Livengood Shields.

Coy Edgar Shields Sr., a proud graduate of North Carolina State University (1957) with a degree in Civil Engineering and an advanced degree in Construction Management leaves behind a legacy defined by excellence, integrity, and love.

Over a distinguished career, Coy was a partner at Faison Associates, where he led the firm’s design and construction efforts.  He was instrumental in shaping the skylines of the Southeast and as far west as Texas, building shopping centers, office parks, and hotels across the region.  Known for never missing a budget or a deadline, Coy was regarded as one of the most respected professionals in his field.  After 32 years with Faison Associates, he enjoyed a second career as an independent consultant.

Beyond his technical expertise, Coy was a natural mentor.  He took great pride in nurturing the next generation of builders, generously sharing his knowledge, time, and support. Those who worked alongside him not only respected him—they cherished him as a lifelong friend.

Coy’s passion for his profession was matched only by his love and devotion to his family.  He often said that his wife, Joyce aka “Lady”, was his “Mulligan in life”—a second chance at joy, love, and purpose.  He found deep joy and pride in watching his family grow and thrive. Whether on the golf course or at home with his cherished dog, Coy found happiness in life’s simplest pleasures.

Coy Edgar Shields, Sr. leaves behind a legacy of buildings, personal bonds, and boundless love. He will be missed by all who knew him—but especially by those lucky enough to be mentored, loved, or called family by him.

Coy is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Joyce Brescia Shields; daughter, Joni Rojas and her husband, Danny and their children, Ryan (Cat) and Alex (Lauren); son, Coy Shields, Jr. and his wife, Kathy and their children, Zachary and Matthew (Bella); and great-grandchildren, Eden, Raylan, Noah and Owen.  He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Odell Shields.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the Belk Chapel at Queens University, 2287 Radcliff Avenue, Charlotte, NC.
