CHARLOTTE – Gertrude Devore passed away on the night of Thursday, July 16, 2026, at her daughter’s home in Charlotte.  She had just celebrated her 90^th birthday this past June 22.

Mrs. Devore was born in West Pittston, PA on June 22, 1936, to Joseph and Gertrude Reiss.  She grew up in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and later attended College Misericordia.  She graduated from Misericordia with a degree in dietetics.  After graduation, she moved to the Bronx, NY where she worked at the V.A. hospital as a dietician.  There, she met her future husband Donald (Don), and they were married in 1963.  After getting married, Gertrude transitioned into a wonderful stay at home mother.  Once their children were grown, Gertrude went back to work for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system as a library assistant.

Don and Gertrude moved their family from New Jersey to Charlotte in 1968, and Gertrude quickly learned of Myrtle Beach, SC.  She loved the beach, and many, many, many family vacations/weekends were spent at the shore.  They enjoyed traveling in general, and they shared many trips together within the USA and several trips to Europe.

Survivors include her three children, Joseph and wife, Sarah, Karen Acken and husband, Allen, and Thomas and wife, Karen; grandchildren, Katie Acken, Hannah Devore and husband, Chad Raybon, Kevin Acken and wife Nicole, Jacob Devore, Matthew Devore; and great-grand children, Amelia and Leo Acken; and her sister, Kathleen Reiss.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Devore; her brothers, Joseph Reiss, Thomas Reiss, William Reiss and George Reiss; her sister, Mary Theresa Reiss, and her grandson, Michael Devore.

We loved her dearly and will miss her greatly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Thursday July 30, 2026, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Joshua Voitus officiating.  Prior to the Mass, a rosary will be prayed in the sanctuary starting at 1:15 pm.  The family will receive friends following the Mass in the parish Activity Center.
