Philip "Phil" Cecil Blount III
June 28, 2026
CHARLOTTE - Philip "Phil" Cecil Blount III, died at home surrounded by family on Sunday, June 28, 2026, following a period of declining health.
Phil was born on October 3rd, 1953, the son of Philip "Tee Wee" Blount II and Irene Everton. He grew up in the small, close-knit town of Jamesville, North Carolina and was a stand-out athlete in both baseball and basketball. He also spent many hours fishing and hunting as well as helping in the family's Friendly Grocery.
Phil attended North Carolina State University, graduating in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology. At State, he was an outfielder on the varsity baseball team that won three consecutive ACC Championships in 1973, 1974, and 1975. Phil was an avid Wolfpack fan, watching and supporting their athletic programs at every chance. "Go Pack!".
After working in various sales and management positions at Homelite and PCA International, he joined the marketing team at Fletcher Barnhardt & White Inc. His marketing career culminated in the founding of his own company: Icons, Inc. His favorite projects involved commemorating the careers of NASCAR racing legends. Phil also served as an independent trustee for Bragg Financial's Queens Road Mutual Funds.
Phil met his wife, Jane, through a mutual friend, and had their first date in Davidson, NC. They spent 37 happy and adventuresome years together. They shared a love of sports and were guided by this passion as they tackled challenges they faced as a team. One of their greatest accomplishments and joys of life was raising their two sons together.
Phil was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church since 2001 where he served as an elder and held several positions of leadership. He was dedicated in his study of the bible and looked forward to his time as a member of several bible study groups as a regular part of his week, especially alongside his brothers in Christ as a member of the Sons of Timaeus.
He will be remembered for his steadfast faith, deep love of family, infectious positivity, work ethic, and keen sense of humor. He had a way of making others feel like they were the most important person in the room. He loved to travel and looked forward to family trips to Kiawah Island and Lake Wateree. He had a deep love for animals and his furry family members.
One of his greatest accomplishments was co-founding Philips Academy with Jane. Philips Academy is a school that serves students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Phil was a significant force in the school's unwavering commitment to providing educational excellence to this population and creating a community rooted in purpose, compassion, and hope.
He is predeceased by his father and mother, Tee Wee and Irene; brothers in law, Norman and Joe; niece, Meredith, and nephew-in-law, Scott. He is survived by his wife, Jane; his two sons, Philip and Jameson (Emily); sisters, Gwen and Mary Charles; and cousins, nephews, nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews whom he loved dearly.
Everyone who encountered Phil was amazed at his resilience and positivity as he faced multiple medical challenges. He never complained and was quick to move the conversation to brighter topics. Many thanks to Phil's medical team, who were attentive and generous in their care for him.
A service of celebration will be held at 2:00PM on Tuesday, July 7th, 2026 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC, 28211. Phillip will be missed. I met Mr. Blount while training his son Phillip for the special Olympics. His expectation of excellence and resilience is what made an impression on me and was one of the main traits that he passed on to his son which resulted in him being an Olympic Gold medalist! Phil was always generous and compassionate and was a force of nature. I wish I would have met him much sooner as he became a great friend and brother in Christ. He has earned his wings!
