Sherry Felkner, of Charlotte, died unexpectedly but peacefully at home on Sunday, June 14, 2026 having lived a very happy, long life full of love.

She was born in St Louis, Missouri, the daughter of John and Margaret Doran, and referred to St. Louis as her hometown for the rest of her life. She told many happy stories about her childhood in St. Louis with her parents and her grandparents. She loved visiting the beautiful department stores of the 1930’s and 40’s in downtown St. Louis and visiting the Saint Louis Art Museum with her father who deeply encouraged her love of art. She remained in St. Louis for college at Washington University beginning her studies in the art school and pursuing her interests in sculpture and drawing. In her sophomore year, drawn to her love for reading, writing and journalism, she transitioned to the English department. After graduating with a BA in English, she became a sixth-grade teacher first in St. Louis County, where she was named Teacher of the Year, and later in San Francisco, CA. 

She married Dick Felkner, her loving husband of 67 years, in 1959. They met at Washington University while Sherry was an undergraduate and Dick was a medical student. Early in their marriage, Sherry and Dick had many sweltering adventures in their non air-conditioned Volkswagen Bug while moving cross country from St. Louis to San Francisco for his medical residency and internship, and then to Sherman, Texas for his service in the Air Force. After leaving Sherman, they moved to Kirkwood, Missouri where their first two children were born. In 1967, Sherry and Dick moved to Charlotte where Dick began a medical practice and where they lived happily for the rest of their lives. 

While raising her young family, Sherry also loved collecting antiques and interior design. She and Dick built their beautiful home of 49 years on Pomfret Lane in 1974 which was featured on the Mint Museum Home and Garden tour in the spring of 1979. A devoted mother to her three children Peter, Caroline, and Anne, she was blessed with six grandchildren who spent countless hours with their beloved “Grammy”.  She was a generous volunteer of her time with the Charlotte Antiques Club, The Charlotte Assembly, the Mint Museum Auxiliary, the Mecklenburg Medical Auxiliary, and Charlotte Country Day School. 

Sherry is survived by and will be greatly missed by her husband, Richard Felkner and her three children Pete Felkner (Mary Martha) of Charlotte, Caroline Grard of Charlotte, and Anne Rogers (Brad) of Nashville, Tennessee as well as her grandchildren Emilie Grard, Jack Felkner, David Felkner, Catherine Felkner, Kate Rogers, and Abbie Rogers. She is predeceased by her beloved family, her parents John Doran and Margaret Doran and her brothers Glenn Doran and Tom Doran.

A celebration of Sherry’s life will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211 on Friday June 19, 2026 at 2:00 pm.
