Betty Brockett Benton
June 3, 2026
Betty Brockett Benton, 86, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, surrounded by the love of her family and the memories of a life beautifully lived.
Born on October 28, 1939, in Bainbridge, Georgia, Betty was the daughter of the late William James ('Willie Jim') Brockett and Lillie Mel Brockett. Raised in the South she loved so dearly, Betty embodied the grace, strength, and wit that would define her throughout her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Blair Benton Mason (Ernie) of Sarasota, Florida; her son, John Brockett Benton (Lee) of Charleston, South Carolina; her beloved grandchildren, Madison Bledsoe (Scott) of Nashville, Tennessee, Benton Mason of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Sophie and Carson Benton of Charleston, South Carolina; and her treasured great-granddaughter, Eloise Blair Bledsoe of Nashville, Tennessee.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, William James ('Jimmy') Brockett Jr.; her beloved sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Ann Brockett; and her former husband, Edward Arnold Benton.
A lifelong learner, Betty's love of knowledge and education led her to a career in teaching. An avid reader and thoughtful writer, she found joy in books, learning, and the written word. Her journals captured a lifetime of observations and reflections, and her handwritten notes became treasured keepsakes for family and friends.
Known to her grandchildren as 'Nana,' she was fiercely independent, spirited, and full of determination. A true spitfire, Betty approached life on her own terms, with a sharp mind, strong opinions, and a resilience that inspired those around her. While her independence was legendary, so too was her devotion to family and friends.
Betty's greatest joy was spending time with the people she loved. She was happiest gathered with family at St. Teresa Beach, enjoying a lively game of bridge with friends, sharing conversations at book club, or cheering on her beloved Georgia Bulldogs.
A true Southern belle in every sense of the word, Betty will be remembered for her elegance, intelligence, independence, and beauty. Though she will be deeply missed, her influence and love will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
A private celebration of Betty's life will be held by her family this summer on Little Gasparilla Island, Florida, a place filled with the beauty, peace, and cherished family memories she loved so dearly.
