Lisa Anne Gravell Tweardy
June 2, 2026
Lisa Anne Gravell Tweardy, 61, passed away on June 2, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, surrounded by family. Her death at the hands of pancreatic cancer was sudden, unexpected, and far too soon. Lisa spent most of her life avoiding the spotlight but, unfortunately for her, she was impossible to miss.
Born on August 13, 1964, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Maneth and Irene Gravell, Lisa grew up in Germantown, Maryland, with her two siblings, Amy and Maneth. Before she became an inventor, entrepreneur, mentor, and founder, she was a record-setting swimmer. She and her two siblings (yes, even Amy) were such a force in the pool that rival teams joked that Darnestown swimming should be called “the Gravells.”
Lisa built a remarkable career in medical technology, though she would have preferred to talk about her patients, products, and team. She earned a bachelor's degree in Fundamental Science/Bioengineering from Lehigh University and a master's in Management of Technology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Wharton. Over more than 30 years, she worked across orthopedics, prosthetics, neuroscience, spine innovation, and personalized medical devices. She was awarded 19 patents and published research in Spine and The Journal of Neurosurgery.
Most recently, Lisa was founder and CEO of Mign, a Charlotte-based company reimagining orthopaedic care through digitally tailored, 3D-printed medical wearables. Mign was built around a belief that could have served as a thesis for Lisa's entire career: care should be smarter, kinder, and better designed for the person who had to live inside it.
Through every stop of her journey, she gathered a loving community of devoted friends and colleagues, many of whom joined her again and again for every adventure. Her team relied on Lisa for strategy and advice, but also for friendship and support. If you were building something, she would help make it better. If you were lost, she would help you find a door. If you needed a place to stay, she would (and did) hand you her own keys. She also gave back to the community with the same conviction, volunteering and mentoring artists, entrepreneurs, and innovators at every opportunity.
Lisa believed everyone should work hard and be nice to people. She could never understand meanness, cruelty, arrogance, or people who made themselves larger by making someone else feel small. Though she was quick with a sharp-witted remark of her own, she possessed the rare gift of being genuinely funny without putting others down.
Despite her accomplishments, Lisa hated being the center of attention. She loved photography but refused to be photographed. She would have her team members speak to the press, present at conferences, and star in their marketing videos. Even at the end, when she first learned of her terminal illness, the very first thing she did was turn to her sons to make sure they were okay.
An adventurer at heart, Lisa loved travel and the arts. She lived in Switzerland for seven years, loved Nantucket, and held Florence as her favorite city. She became an expert on a wide range of topics, from barbecue to Persian rugs. Her taste in music was also uniquely Lisa and one of her great joys, ranging from Springsteen to Prince to Jay-Z to the Stones. She went to concerts often, would happily go alone, and refused to sit in the cheap seats.
Lisa is survived by her sons, Connor Tweardy (Kendall) and Christian Tweardy; her brother, Maneth Gravell (Megan); her sister, Amy Gravell (Ken); and her beloved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a chosen family of friends, colleagues, founders, artists, patients, mentees, fellow travelers, and people she helped more than they could ever repay.
Even though she would hate it, a memorial party in her honor will be held Saturday, June 13, from 4 PM to 6 PM at the Mign office, 301 Camp Road Suite 105, Charlotte, NC 28206. More information is available at: https://lisa-memorial-party.fly.dev/.
Lisa never wanted to be the main character, but she made the story better for everyone she met. She will be missed more than words can express.
