Susan Raker McIntyre Goodman
May 6, 2026
Susan Raker McIntyre Goodman died peacefully on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the robust age of 88. Susan was born December 23, 1937, in Lumberton, NC, the second child of the late Evelyn and Dr. Stephen McIntyre.
Susan lived a spirited youth playing competitive basketball and tennis, attending Camp Yonahlossee for Girls, enjoying summers at the family home in Myrtle Beach, SC, and romping with the many family dogs. After graduating from Lumberton High School, Susan obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC.
Following a year teaching Fine Arts at La Jolla High School in San Diego, CA, Susan was lured back to the east coast by a dashing young airman from Salisbury, NC. Susan married John Cameron Goodman in January of 1960.
She shared her deep love of everything creative and artistic with her children, grandchildren, and countless students at Charlotte Country Day School, teaching them to see the beauty and struggle of life through an appreciation of the arts. Friends and family will forever remember Susan through her own beautiful artwork, which she shared generously for decades.
John and Susan enjoyed 63 years of marriage, moving frequently between Charlotte, Raleigh and Wilmington, DE, before retiring to Pawley's Island, SC. During her time in Pawleys, Susan honed her talent, painting many of her finest works. She also served as a board member for the South Carolina Watercolor Society and designed and built the columbarium and gardens at Georgetown Presbyterian Church, a true labor of love of which she was very proud.
Susan and John returned home to Charlotte in 2012, settling at the Sharon where Susan designed and built a charming cottage that served as a model for future development. During her 14 years at The Sharon, Susan served her community on the Board of Directors, the Fundraising & Community Outreach Committee, and the Residents' Council Welcoming Committee. She was beloved for her vibrant personality and endless energy and is already missed by all who knew her.
Susan is survived by her son, Cameron Ree Goodman and his wife Lori of Charlotte, NC, and their children Merrit and Raker, and her daughter, Lyn Goodman Shoop and her husband, Brett of Dewey Beach, DE, and their children Conner, Owen, and Evelyn.
The family will hold a private memorial at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
