CHARLOTTE – Merrill Frances Breighner, age 79, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Friday, December 26, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving family.

She was predeceased by her grandson, Michael.

Merrill’s compassion, gentleness, and humility will endure.  Her quiet grace and loving presence will be missed by all who knew her.  Merrill loved music, enjoyed playing card games, and cherished family vacations at the beach.

Much love and peace to the family of sweet, gentle Merrill. She was my classmate at the Academy of Notre Dame, and I greatly admired her.

Thank you for sharing the news of Merrill. I am very sorry for your loss of this genuinely kind and gentle woman.
I went to NDA with Merrill and we served on the Student Council. We met later at class reunions, and she was still the same person, but evermore graceful, and special in her words and actions. Heaven will be happy to have another angel and I’m sure Merrill has already received her wings. She will be a guardian to all of her surviving loved ones. May you find peace in knowing that there are many who share in your sadness.

The Academy of Notre Dame class of 1964 remembers lovely Merrill as a member of the National Honor Society, one of the four officers of our senior class, a participant in many of the extra-curricular activities and a most devout person. Merrill was sincerely everyone’s friend. Even in illness she demonstrated how one might turn one’s own suffering into a blessing for all humanity.
