CHARLOTTE – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Safwat (Sonny) Wassef, who departed this life on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the age of 69, surrounded by his loved ones.
Sonny was born in Egypt and later came to the United States, where he built a meaningful career as a Mechanical Engineer. He was deeply loved by many and cherished as a grandfather affectionately known as “Gidu.”
Throughout his life, Sonny touched countless hearts with his warm smile, kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and compassion. In retirement, he devoted much of his time to helping others, always ready to lend a hand or offer a listening ear.
Sonny is survived by his beloved spouse, Loula; his son, Joe Youssef and his wife, Lynn; and his treasured grandchild, Sebastian Youssef. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 22, 2025, at St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, 5108 Kuykendall Road, Charlotte, NC. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
May he rest in peace and remain forever in our hearts.

He was the true definition of a wealthy man; for all that knew him loved him.
If you were lucky enough to call him your friend then you knew he had a kind heart with a beautiful soul. He had an easy welcoming smile for all who were fortunate enough to meet him.
May God hold him in the palm of his hand now and always and may his memory be eternal!
May God be with his beautiful wife and family. What a tremendous loss. You will be missed my friend! -
Knowing someone like Sonny happens "once in a lifetime". I first met Sonny about 2-3 years ago at a neighborhood gym in Mint Hill. He was friendly not only to me but to everyone. He was on a first name basis to all that walked in and would always take time to help anyone. It didn't take long for Sonny and I to become good friends. Before we knew it, I was calling him Brother and he was calling me Sis. He was funny, kind, warm and had a Big Heart. There was nothing he wouldn't do for a friend even insisting on taking my husband and I to the airport at 5AM and then picking us up at 12 midnight. He did this always with a smile and an open heart. He would not take NO for an answer. He would always tell me, "We are family now". That was just one of many things we shared to help one another. The world has lost a Great Man and I have lost a Great Friend but I know he is with "Our Father".
Rest in Peace dear Brother.
Always in my heart.

My friend Safwat moved from the earth to heaven. He didn’t die, but he moved from the death world to the life world with our Lord Jesus Christ, surrounded by the angels and the saints.
With broken hearts, but full of faith we ask our Lord to repose his soul in the Paradise of joy, in the heavenly Jerusalem. I kew Safwat since 1994, he was a great man, honest, faithful, helpful and nice personality. Sherif korolos and I were the last people saw him a life , on Wednesday, we left the hospital at 8:30pm, he was okay and talked with us normally, but he passed at 1:00 am in Thursday. he was helping the community in all the churches he went. finally he stayed with us at the Greek Orthodox Church, we ask our Lord Jesus Christ to grant him with the heavenly rewards. Safwat , RIP, you will be missed. pray for us in heaven.
