Doris May Bernstein

 CHARLOTTE - Doris May Bernstein, 81, passed away on May 12, 2025, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, from pneumonia and pneumonitis. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Harry K. Black, Jr. (Jerry), and by her son, Keefe Bernstein, of Dallas, Texas. Doris is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Allison Bernstein; and her grandsons, Calvin and Charlie Bernstein. She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Weissman; her mother, Hannah Weissman; and her sister, Roslyn Ashley.

A Bronx native, Doris graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Hunter College with a degree in chemistry and minors in both physics and mathematics. After moving to Charlotte in 1972, she taught all three subjects at Central Piedmont Community College and went on to work as a technical writer in North Carolina, Texas, and California. She was an avid reader, an animal lover, and a lifelong volunteer for progressive causes, as well as a sparkling wit, devoted aunt and stepmother, and true master of the art of friendship. 

Funeral services will be held in Saddle Brook, New Jersey, at Riverside Cemetery on May 22, 2025. A celebration of Doris’s life will be held in Charlotte at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity; PBS, NPR, or your local public broadcasting station; or your local public library.
