CHARLOTTE – Harold Dunnagan passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at The Cypress of Charlotte. He was 90 years young—a life lived with passion, purpose, and deep connections.
Born on May 26, 1934, in Winston-Salem, N.C., Harold was a proud graduate of Reynolds High School and a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. In 1958, he graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a lifelong Tarheel and dedicated RAMS Club member. For those who knew his passion recall his “Beat Duke!” cheer.
Harold built a distinguished career in the international textile industry, beginning with Milliken & Co. and retiring from Pharr Yarns of McAdenville, N.C. Throughout his career, he held significant sales management positions with Dixie Yarns, Ti-Caro, and Crenshaw Yarns. He was actively involved in the Carolina Yarn Association, American Yarn Spinners Association, and the American Textile Association, a true leader in his field.
Beyond his professional achievements, Harold was a passionate golfer, known for his skill and several holes-in-one. He was also a former snow skier and world traveler, embracing adventure at every opportunity.
Harold is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 40 years, Suzanne Verbeck Dunnagan, and his cherished family: children, Harold Macon Dunnagan Jr. (Kim Dunnagan), William Todd Dunnagan (Tracy Dunnagan), Anna Shawn Dunnagan; stepchildren, Christopher Marion Thigpen (Lisa Thigpen), Mark Verbeck Thigpen (Mary Bradley Thigpen); grandchildren, Katie Dunnagan, Zachary Dunnagan, Will Dunnagan (Macy), Justice Dunnagan, Emma Claire Dunnagan, Charlie Thigpen, Macy Thigpen, Chandler Turner (David), Cameron Thigpen and great-grandchildren, Hadley Dunnagan, Liam Dunnagan, Landon Dunnagan, Jack Turner, Addie Turner. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Leslie Dunnagan and Helen Mildred Morrow Dunnagan; siblings, John Morrow Dunnagan, Helen Clare Barbee and first wife, Ann Crenshaw Sistrunk.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Christ Episcopal Church. Following the service, the family will welcome friends for a reception in the Blue Room.
