Marian Hunter Andrews, a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother died peacefully early Friday morning, March 14, 2025, surrounded by her family after a period of declining health. She was 92.
Born in Charlotte on March 12, 1933, she was the only child of Ethel Brandon Tinley and John David Hunter. She was a graduate of Central High School and attended the University of North Carolina – Greensboro, where she received a BA degree in Primary Education and was a college leader in a variety of activities,

Marian was married to the love of her life, John Van Ness Andrews, in 1955. The pair met in high school and dated for five years before their long and happy marriage of 69 years. Throughout her active life Marian was a devoted and enthusiastic volunteer worker and leader in a variety of church, community, and charitable organizations including Queens University, the Charlotte Symphony, the Nature Museum, Charlotte Memorial Hospital (Atrium Health) and Charlotte Latin School, where she helped establish the Parents’ Council and served as its first President. She was a long-time member and former Deacon of Myers Park Presbyterian Church and a Sunday School leader.
When she was young, Marian was a competitive swimmer and participated in the North Carolina Junior Olympics. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Aberdeen Proving Grounds women’s golf team when her husband was based there while in military service. She enjoyed traveling with her husband around the United States and Europe making many lifelong friends. In addition to golf and travel, Marian loved gardening and playing bridge with her close friends.
She is survived by her husband, daughter, Miriam Andrews of Raleigh, and son, John Andrews, Jr and wife Louise of Midland. In addition, she is survived by four grandchildren, Adrian Wilson and wife Rachel of Durham, Caroline Wilson of Raleigh, John Andrews III and wife Kimberly of Greenville, SC, and Hunter Andrews of Charlotte and one great grandchild John Andrews IV.
Her family would like to thank her many caregivers, especially Shana Williams, Virginia Bowie, Dr. Elizabeth Abernathy, VIA Health Partners (Hospice), and the staff at the Cypress Stewart Health Center for their loving care of her during her final few years of life.
A celebration of life will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church on Monday, March 24, 2025 at 2:00 PM and the family will receive friends immediately following the at the church. The service will be livestreamed at https://myersparkpres.org/live/
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Marian’s memory be made to Crossnore Communities for Children (PO Box 249, Crossnore, NC 28616-0249; crossnore.org) or the charity of one’s choice.
