Betty Gene "BG" Metzler

February 12, 2025

CHARLOTTE – With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of BG Metzler, who passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at the age of 80.  A strong woman who loved her family, friends, and community with an uncompromising passion.

BG was born in Pittsburgh, grew up in Massachusetts, and moved to Charlotte with her beloved husband, Bob.  They shared a beautiful life of sixty years of marriage full of travel and building a strong, loving family.  As a mother to Rob, Chris, and Lani, she led with strength, wisdom, and a deep devotion that shaped their lives in immeasurable ways.

BG’s role as “Gram” was one she treasured most.  She adored her grandchildren—Porter, Peyton, Luke, Jones, Chrisy, Chloe, Pierce, and Dane and her bonus grandchildren — Savannah and Melena Lee, who brought her endless pride and happiness.  Whether cheering from the sidelines or shaping her gifts of strength and independence, she filled their lives with love and unforgettable memories.

She also impacted the Charlotte community for over fifty years as a public figure, non-profit leader, and volunteer holding roles such as an NBC Weather Anchor, Director of Marketing for both Discovery Place and Charlotte Center City Partners and serving as a board member for organizations such as Right Moves for Youth and Senior Scholars.

BG is survived by her husband, Bob; her children and their spouses, Rob and Heather, Chris and Jen, and Lani and Marcus; and her ten adoring grandchildren.  She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.  She will be remembered most for her quick wit and strong determination.  She is living in peace with the Lord now.

A celebration of BG’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Caldwell Presbyterian Church, 1609 E. 5th Street, Charlotte, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

When I think of BG, I think of joy and fun. Wherever she was she spread joy. Her unique sense of humor gave you permission to relax, not be too serious but get the job done. A committee meeting with BG meant never a dull moment. I know she has all the host of heaven laughing. God bless Bob and family. Know that she was loved by many people whose lives she touched.

Roger and I are saddened by the news of BG’s passing. Although we didn’t have the privilege of knowing her or Bob well, we are forever grateful they chose us to buy their beautiful home on Club Road. I have thought of them often as Roger and I continue to enjoy the beauty and energy we feel in that special space. She has certainly left her heart print for so many of us to appreciate. Warm wishes to Bob, their family and friends.
