Dorothy Jean Kidd

Dorothy Jean Saxton Kidd died on November 27, 2024 after valiantly living with cancer. A daughter of the south, Dorothy was born in Newton, Mississippi on April 5, 1940 to Horace Watts and Lucy Lee Saxton. After graduating from Newton High School in 1958, she moved with her mother and several siblings to Las Vegas.  

She worked for First National Bank and eventually took a job with Clark County where she climbed the ranks and was promoted to Assistant County Administrator. She married Mike Hutchens and gave birth to her son, Gage. She eventually tried her hand in the private sector by becoming a real estate broker specializing in land. She assembled and sold property to major developers in the Las Vegas Valley during its greatest growth years. Always involved in the community, Dorothy was appointed to the Clark County Housing Authority where she served for 28 years. The Authority builds affordable housing and she was honored to have a senior development named after her - the Dorothy Kidd Senior Mobile Home Park.  

Dorothy was also very active in the Southern Nevada Homebuilders Association serving many years on the board and eventually becoming a Life Director.  She was selected by the City of Las Vegas to serve on the City Advisory Committee on Downtown Development, becoming its chair the following year. The County Commission appointed her to the Spring Valley Town Board where she served as chair for eight years. Always devoted and involved with her church, she found her pastor 80 acres of land to build a mega church.

After retirement, Dorothy served on the board for Habitat for Humanity for seven years. She moved to Charlotte, NC in August of 2020 to be with her son and his young family. She became a member of Providence Baptist Church and found a community full of faith, love and support. She also cherished her friends at Overture Cotswold Adult Community. Dorothy embraced Charlotte and dearly loved her life because of the incredible people she called friends.

Dorothy is survived by her sisters Germice and Linda as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM. on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte

    Germice, I just discovered that Dorothy Jean passed away. I am so sorry. I hope you are doing alright. Remember the laughs we all had rideing to school in the A Model.

    I was in the class with Dorothy Jean at Newton High School, Newton Mississippi. Dorothy was pretty, smart and a leader in our class In later yeas she was instrumental in getting up our class reunions' and keeping our class in touch with each other.
