Elizabeth "Betty" Carpenter Edwards

November 1, 2024

Elizabeth “Betty” Carpenter Edwards, born January 10, 1927, and died Friday, November 1, 2024 in Charlotte, NC. The beloved only child of Vera McPhail Carpenter and Luther Preston Carpenter, Betty attended Myers Park Elementary School and Central High School, before heading off to Winthrop College in Rock Hill. Betty excelled in extra-curriculars where she developed her life-long love of bridge. After graduation, Betty worked for Parrott & Richards Law Firm, J.P. Stevens in Greenville, SC, and most notably, fifty-two years as the receptionist at Myers Park United Methodist Church.

On December 15, 1951, Betty married the love of her life, Asa Covington Edwards, Jr.  For Betty and A.C., the most important thing in life was their family. Betty is survived by her three devoted children: Frances Elizabeth Norris and her husband Matt Norris, Asa “Ace” Covington Edwards III and his wife Anne Tope Edwards, and Anne McPhail Townsend and her husband David Townsend. She is also survived by her adored and adoring grandchildren: Charles Townsend (Michelle), Courtney Townsend Santos (Donald), Asa Edwards IV, Robert “Rudy” Edwards (Lee), Catherine Norris Jewett (Brooks), and Sarah Norris Strohecker (Caleb). Her great-grandchildren are Abigail, Hannah, and Sam Townsend; Ezra Edwards; Harrison, Ford and Covey Santos; and Eliza and Ward Jewett. Betty is also survived by cousins, and very special friends – especially Bailey Barnett, Bobbie Hastings, and Keith Fortier.

Betty lived her life with joy and love involving herself in many special activities including Junior Women’s Club, The 9 Holers and Ladies Bridge Club of Myers Park Country Club; Boy and Girl Scouts; 5th Dimension Sunday School class at Myers Park Baptist; Fellowship class, Lydia Circle, and a recipient of the Special Mission Service Award at Myers Park United Methodist. Betty belonged to five bridge clubs, three garden clubs, and her favorite club – The Lunch Bunch. These devoted friends ate at the old Town House Restaurant every Friday and traveled to eat, play bridge, and golf on regular trips to the mountains and the beach.
Betty shared her favorite memories with her family, especially summers spent with her Pendleton, SC cousins, keeping her pony in the carriage house of her Dilworth home and riding in Freedom Park, Bolling Road parties and neighbors that became family, UNC Chapel Hill games, celebrations at home and the beach. Most memorably to all who love her are the front porch “Happy Hours.” If you ever sat on the porch with Betty, think of the love and laughter as that is how she would like to be remembered.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Betty Edwards will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Myers Park United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Memorials may be sent to Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.

Mrs. Edwards was a true favorite of mine out of the Lunch Bunch group, in which my mother was a faithful member. Mrs. Edwards was so much fun, with a great wry smile after kidding around with me. She was willing to help and “be there” for my mom and for all those around her, including strangers (which were never really strangers to her). She was also very caring and loving and a real sweetheart. I was too young to remember when I was introduced to her, but I always loved her sunny attitude ever time I was in her presence. She was a great friend and a true lady in all respects. Many will miss her but will never forget her!

I knew Betty from her days at MPUMC, and she was such a joy to be with.
She knew everyone in the church, so you could always know who had a baby, who was sick, and any other information.
Betty was a role model of how to treat people with a smile and kindness.

Asa spoke so lovingly of his grandma, saying she was the greatest grandma who ever lived! In hearing his stories about her, and how he would sometimes go home to visit grandma, lay in her lap and share his thoughts with her, I know that Asa was right! Wishing the Edwards family God's peace and comfort during this difficult time, knowing that grandma still lives and blossoms in your hearts each and every day.
