Diane Godbold Cox

June 16, 2024

CHARLOTTE – Diane Godbold Cox, 76, started her last journey on the Sunday morning of June 16, 2024. She was surrounded by family in her final days. She was singing in her final moments.

Diane danced and sang throughout her lifetime. She was inspired by the love she had for her family and the beauty of the natural world.

As a girl, she would spend hours investigating insects, catching butterflies and playing with her pet ducks. She grew up on Mobile Bay and fell in love with its natural beauty, calling it home for most of her life, but she could also be found sitting by a creek in Western NC once in a while.

All of these experiences can be seen in her artwork. If she wasn’t dancing or singing, she was making art. She was an artist above all.

Diane was born April 6,1948 in Mobile Al. She attended Barton Academy elementary, and graduated from Davidson High School. Diane received her BA at University of South Alabama and went on to have several different careers. She taught elementary school after graduating college. Following that was a lifetime of motherhood while she went on to become a real estate agent, a case manager for Mobile Mental Health, the manager of Providence Hospital gift shop, and owner of a Hallmark shop and the antique shop, Hafners of Hillcrest.

As a teen, Diane loved boating on Mobile Bay and that is where she met Norman Cox. They married in 1970 and had two sons, Shaun and Wade. She raised her sons on the bay and was an active member of Unitarian Universalist Church, as well as a founder of the Mobile UU youth group.

In 1988 while working with Mobile Mental Health, she met Wendye Wofford. They became best friends and partners for life, raising teenage boys and watching countless sunsets together over the bay.

Diane is survived by her mother, Fan Godbold; her brother, Joey Godbold, and family; her sister, Frances Alston, and family; her son Shaun Cox, and family; her son Wade Cox; her grandchildren, Westbrook and Llandis; and her partner, Wendye Wofford. She was preceded in death by her father, Norman Godbold.

In honor of her final wishes, Diane’s remains will be spread in Mobile bay and also in one of her favorite creeks in WNC.

Diane is my Sister-in-law. I was 6 years old when my brother, Norman, fell in love with her. In all the time since, she always gave love, kindness, and graciousness to me. She is still a Beautiful Princess! I have many memories of Diane from outings on Mobile Bay, University of South Alabama; Atlanta, Georga; Jackson Mississippi (Pearl River); Aberdeen Maryland; Philidelphia, Pennsylvania and White Plains, New York.
Diane's beauty was inside and out. She truly treated me as her little brother. Later in my life, she would listen to me and give me good council and advice. She is a blessing in my life. My heart goes out to all who love her. I will carry my memories warmly in my heart. She will be missed.
Her spirit, talent and beauty live on in her sons, and in the lives of the people she touched.
To Shaun and Wade, I love you.
    Uncle Stevie

We will remember Diane as a free spirit and old soul, who was always looking for a new adventure. A nature walk? An exploration to a new place? Visiting with customers, family, new friends? Sitting in her backyard listening to nature around her? Through the years we came to know her as our Aunt Wendye’s life partner and soulmate, someone who enjoyed a good episode of Gunsmoke and good conversation. Though in her past several years we saw her light diminished, she was still a happy free spirit. Wishing her flights of fancy forever!
