Lloyd Franklin Baucom

May 18, 2024

CHARLOTTE – Lloyd Franklin Baucom, 89, peacefully passed away Saturday, May 18, 2024, at The Sharon at Southpark.

Lloyd was born November 12, 1934, in Marshville, NC, the youngest child and only son of the late Jesse Franklin Baucom and Ruth Holmes Baucom.  He attended Marshville High School, graduating in 1953, and entered Wake Forest College in the fall of that year.  He graduated with a B.S. in 1957.  He then served in the U.S. Army, Military Intelligence Corps, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant, from 1958-1960, followed by active reserve duty from 1960-1967, attaining the rank of Captain.

Lloyd returned to Wake Forest to finish his six-year plan for undergrad then law school, graduating from the School of Law in 1961, first in his class.  At that time, he moved to Charlotte to begin practicing law, first with Henderson and Henderson, then with what is now Baucom, Claytor, Benton, Morgan, and Wood, until his retirement in February of 2021.

In March of 1962, he met Joan Morrow, the love of his life, and they married in Mooresville on August 11 of that year, celebrating their 61st anniversary this past August.

Lloyd primarily practiced what he referred to as “dirt law”, estate planning and administration, and business representation.  In a career that spanned 60 years, he practiced law with integrity, professionalism, and compassion.  His partners and clients can attest to his faithful association and representation for decades.  In 2011 he was recognized by the North Carolina State Bar for 50 years of service.  In 2016, Lloyd was inducted by the North Carolina Bar Association into the General Practice Hall of Fame for exemplary service and high ethical and professional standards, a role model for all lawyers.  He was a pivotal member of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association for many years, serving a term as its president.  Lloyd also served on the NC Board of Law Examiners for twelve years, in the office of chairman his last two years, then becoming an emeritus member.  He was a member of the North Carolina State Bar, the North Carolina Bar Association, Senior Lawyers Division, and the American Bar Association; and served two terms as a member and vice chairman of the Courthouse Review and Implementation Committee appointed by the Mecklenburg County Commissioners to assist in the planning and construction of a new courthouse.

His faith in God guided all he did and how he treated people.  He had an unwavering commitment to what was important to him.  During Lloyd’s years in practice, his involvement with church and community matters was significant, including membership at St. John’s Baptist Church for over forty-five years, where he was elected deacon and chairman of deacons, then deacon emeritus; membership in the Charlotte Jaycees and later as an officer with the North Carolina Jaycees; board service including two terms as president of Nevins Center, Inc., a vocational training center and a later residential program; membership in the Charlotte Civitan Club, including serving as its president; appointments by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners to the county’s Advisory Board for Intellectual Disability for several terms including two years as chairman; board member and president at Myers Park Country Club; coaching youth baseball and basketball; and member of the Wesley class at Myers Park United Methodist Church.  Lloyd was a true example of servant leadership.

He was a loving, devoted husband and father, always supportive and encouraging his children to be all they could be.  His favorite role was being grandfather to Austin and Anna.  Lloyd was an avid golfer and skilled woodworker, hobbies he enjoyed for countless years.  Joan and Lloyd were able to take significant trips, which he primarily planned, to Scotland, France, England, Germany, and other locales closer to home.   Many fond family memories were made at the cottage at Ocean Isle Beach for over thirty years.  The lives he touched and the character he exuded cannot be put into words.  His kindness, gentleness, intelligence, and sense of humor were priceless.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Joan Morrow Baucom, daughter Jennifer Baucom Flynn (Ames), son James "Jay" Franklin Baucom, grandson Austin Lloyd Flynn (Sophie), granddaughter Anna Flynn Gelbaugh (Colin), and great-grandson Cameron Lloyd Flynn, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by his sisters, Elsie Bonsky, Betty Killian, and Lucille Cameron.

The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at The Ivey and Weisiger Health Center at The Sharon.

    Mrs. Baucom and Family,
I was so sorry to hear about your loss. Mr. Baucom was a mentor to me and a good friend to my family. It was wonderful in later years of my career to have him as a client. We had great discussions over "dirt" law and life in general. I miss those talks. He was a true gentleman, and I will miss him. You and your family are in our prayers.

Lloyd was a true friend for decades. He and Joan were such good nextdoor neighbors to my parents, Mark and Lois Yandle, for 25 years as well as our trusted family and business attorney. When Daddy died and I became his Executrix, Lloyd guided me through many difficult personal, financial, and business decisions with legal expertise and great compassion. He was a wonderful source of support and encouragement when I felt overwhelmed and confused by it all. He will always have a special place in my heart. Sending love and my deepest condolences to Joan and Jay and Jennifer and all his family. You are in my prayers.

Lloyd was married to my second cousin Joan Baucom. My memories of him include being a flower girl at their wedding in 1962 at the age of 11. Also seeing Joan and him together at family get togethers and their children Jennifer and Jay at times. I was always impressed with him as a gentleman. He gave much to mankind in his profession and love to his family. He will be missed. God Bless the family. Always, Jane
