Betsy Merritt Sherard passed peacefully away on August 9, 2022 at Southminster in Charlotte, NC. Betsy was born in Mt. Airy, NC on May 13, 1929, the daughter of William Edward Merritt and Olivine Porterfield Merritt.

Betsy graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1947 and attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA. She was a very active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. Additionally, she was involved with the Junior League of Charlotte, Friendship Trays, the German Club, and she counseled young ladies at Florence Crittenton Services.

Betsy was a most special mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved her family very much. She so enjoyed her times spent with her special friends, whether playing bridge or enjoying golf at the Charlotte Country Club. Perhaps her greatest joy was when Betsy and Moffatt built their beach home on Bald Head Island, NC. Having her entire family there enjoying each other was the highlight of her life.

In addition to Betsy’s parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Moffatt Grier Sherard, Jr, her daughter, Catherine Choate Ward, her sister Rachel Merritt Carpenter Bell and her stepson, Moffatt Grier Sherard III.

She is survived by her son, William M. Choate and wife, Martha P. “Marcy” Choate, two stepsons, John F. Sherard and Owens S. Sherard of Charlotte, NC. She was most proud of her grandchildren: William Merritt Choate, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, John Joseph Crowell Choate and wife, Blair, Leigh Ward Brice and husband, Owen F. Brice and John Walter Sherard all of Charlotte, NC. Betsy especially loved her son-in-law, Joseph Neill Ward of Winston-Salem, NC. Her three great grandchildren were a special gift, Betsy Fitzsimons Brice, Anne Neill Brice and Leighton Thomas Choate, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church at a later date.

The family wishes to express special thanks for their loving and caring attention to Betsy by Walu Wunga, Sabrina Parrish and the wonderful physicians and staff of Southminster.
