Marguerite Rowland Joy

August 6, 2022

Marguerite (Marg) passed away on August 6, 2022. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 23, 1920 to John and Margaret Rowland. Marg was the younger sister of Edward (Ed) Rowland, her only sibling. She graduated from Detroit’s Central High School in 1938. Under her graduation picture was written: “Sweet and petite, cute and neat”; words that would describe her throughout her life. As a young adult, Marg was a member of Detroit Models’ Guild and the Junior Women’s Association for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She married William Raymond Joy (Herb) on October 4, 1941 at the Church of the Incarnation in Detroit.   After starting a family in Detroit, the couple moved to Florida in the early 1950’s and settled in Fort Lauderdale which would become her home for many years.   It was in Florida that she began her career which started as a buyer for Belk Lindsey then onto serving her community and customers in the Banking industry for 37 years until her retirement in 1994 as Vice President Branch Manager at Glendale Federal Bank. Forever influenced as a ‘buyer’ for Belk, Marg never lost her zeal for shopping! Always heading to the back of the store to look for her favorite sign ‘sale’.

After retirement, she spent a little more time with hobbies: shopping, floral arranging, decorating, and doing crossword puzzles. Marg had a quick wit, was reserved but very energetic, and compassionate. She was so loving and giving unconditionally, always putting the needs of others before herself. Her biggest passion was spending time with her family as that brought her so much joy. Marg relocated to Charlotte in 2014 so she could be closer to her family. She attended St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Waxhaw.

Marg was preceded in death by her husband Herb and daughter Dawn Joy Klindt.   She is survived by her daughters Beri Joy Savoca (Chuck) of Mooresville, NC, Jodi Joy Rourke (David) of Waxhaw, NC; Five Grandchildren: Laura Klindt of Boca Raton, FL, Sean Klindt (Stephanie) of Coral Springs, FL, Karie Jones (Ronnie) of Mooresville, NC, Paul 'JR' Endriss (Dianna) of Mooresville, NC, Alyse Breger (Jeremy) of Mooresville, NC; and 19 great-grandchildren. Marg (Mom, Meme, Gammie, Tanty) was thought of as the matriarch of the family; loved so dearly by the entire family including all of her many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Memory and Movement Charlotte Ways to Give - Memory & Movement Charlotte (mmclt.org).

Thank you to her many loving caregivers over the past 6 years.   Gratitude to Dr. Charles Edwards and his caring staff at Memory Movement Charlotte and Hospice of Charlotte, NC.

A celebration of Marg’s life will be held in early October at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Waxhaw, NC.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC; 28204 (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
