Despina Levantis

April 7, 2021

CHARLOTTE – Mrs. Despina Levantis passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. She was born in Corinthos, Greece and lived in Maryland since 1969 and moved to Charlotte, NC in 2014.

Despina is survived by her sons, Spiro and his wife, Christina and Chris and his wife, Ana; grandchildren, George Levantis, Joanna Levantis and Sara Levantis and her sister, Rebecca Pentikis.  She was also blessed with many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.  Despina was preceded in death by her loving husband, John.

John and Despina moved to Maryland from Greece in 1969 and worked hard to provide opportunities for their family. They raised their two sons, ensured they pursued higher education and watched with pride as they went on to successful careers.  Their bond was an example to Spiro and Chris who raised families of their own, with John and Despina loving and caring for their three grandchildren.

Despina grew up in post-war Greece, daughter to a widowed mother who instilled a work ethic and a strong spirit in her.  She had experienced many hardships in her early years and was always thankful for every new day and everything God provided, both good and bad.  She never complained.

Despina was an expert dressmaker and seamstress, well known in the Washington, DC metropolitan area where she spent most of her career at Brooks Brothers, Bloomingdales and Mark Daniel’s Bridal Boutique, working in her chosen and beloved profession.

At home, she was traditional Greek wife and mother and to her friends and extended family, she was beloved and always respected. She will be truly missed.

Funeral Services will be held for Despina at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Internment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. COVID protocols will be followed at the church. For those unable to attend the service, it will be livestreamed at https://www.schgoc.org/

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 701 Norwood Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20905 or St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, 5108 Kuykendall Rd, Charlotte, NC 28270.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606 and Francis J. Was saddened to learn of Despina’s passing. We met at Young at Heart at St Nektarios and while there, we were happy to visit with each other and share stories and memories of our past. I never visited with her when she didn’t say “I have wonderful children and they take such good care of me.” May she Rest In Peace and May her memory be eternal.
