Joseph Daingerfield Dulaney

October 15, 2026

Joseph Daingerfield Dulaney, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died on October 15, 2026. Born on July 14, 1937, to Joseph E. Dulaney and Gwendolyn Daingerfield Dulaney, Joe had a happy time growing up in Richmond, Virginia, and Monroe, North Carolina, with his brother, Elliott, who predeceased him. He always had a special place in his heart for his schools: St. Christopher’s School in Richmond; Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia; and especially Davidson College, where he graduated in 1960. At Davidson, he was a proud member of the FIJI fraternity and a founder of Davidson’s soccer club. Joe spent significant time during the summers in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, at Westglow, the home of his grandfather, Elliott Daingerfield, finding creative ways to get into trouble with Elliott while there. At age 16, while in Blowing Rock, he was introduced to Raleigh Henderson of Houston, Texas. They later married after Joe graduated from Davidson, while he was serving his country in the Army at Fort Benning. After completing his military service, Joe moved to Charlotte, where he began a long and successful career as a property and casualty insurance agent, eventually partnering with Edgar Price as a co-owner of Price, Dulaney & Company until retiring in 1999. During his working career, he also enjoyed being involved in many civic organizations, especially the Charlotte Southpark Rotary Club.

Those who knew Joe knew that he never slowed down. Soon after retiring, he became deeply involved in founding the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum (BRAHM). BRAHM not only preserves Edgewood Cottage, his grandfather Elliott’s first house, but also celebrates Elliott through a statue in front of the museum and displays of his paintings inside. After Raleigh’s passing, Joe found happiness again when he married Virginia Carstarphen. Together, they enjoyed time with all their friends at Southminster, in Blowing Rock, and while traveling the world. Joe was a devout Episcopalian who loved attending services at both Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte and St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock. He could often be heard humming hymns when least expected.

Joe was a joyous dancer who drew many onto the dance floor throughout his life, and he danced until his final days. He also loved golf and enjoyed being out on the courses in Charlotte and at Blowing Rock Country Club. Joe will be remembered as a good man and for his devotion to his family, his service to his country, the relationships he built through business, and the many friendships he developed throughout his life. His life was marked by service. We have heard many stories of people he quietly helped, highlighting his perseverance and commitment to the people and institutions he valued. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Dulaney; his son, Dain Dulaney (Anna); his daughter, Anna Butler (Craig); his grandchildren, Tripp Dulaney (Emily), Anna Hawkins Dulaney, Rebecca Rouse, Isabel Butler, Danielle Butler and Joshua Butler; and his two great-grandchildren, Piper and Jude Dulaney. He is also survived by Virginia’s family: William Bullock (Jane), Jonathan Bullock (Mary), and Martha Baker (Christopher) and their children Elizabeth, Fowler, and William Bullock; Eleanor and Lindsay Bullock, and Campbell and Berkeley Baker.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 2 pm at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte, NC, the family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, P.O. Box 828, Blowing Rock, NC 28605.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Southminster for the care they provided Joe during his time there.
