Nancy Lee Wheeler Dooley

October 1, 2026

CHARLOTTE – Nancy Lee Wheeler Dooley, 91, was called home to the Lord on October 1, 2026. Nancy was born on February 23, 1935, in Roanoke, Virginia, daughter of Vincent and Nina Hege Wheeler. She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia and moved to Charlotte, NC with her husband, Tom Dooley, in 1959.

Nancy’s faith was the steady center of her life. Christ Church was her spiritual home, but she found God everywhere. Nancy moved through life with a true servant’s heart, cherishing her community, sharing her faith, praying diligently for those she loved, and finding joy in her many blessings. She walked every morning she could, often for miles, and was still practicing yoga at 91. Nancy’s family was the light of her life and, to her, one of God’s greatest gifts. She loved them with her whole heart. Her happiest place was her garden, where you’d find her sipping a mug of black coffee or iced tea, listening to the birds, watering her flowers, and relishing God’s creation.

Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Thomas Dooley Jr. (Tom). She is survived by her brother Edgar Vincent Wheeler of Roanoke, VA. daughter, Nina Dooley McLean, and her husband, Dickson, of Wilmington, NC; sons, Robert Thomas Dooley III (Bob) and his wife, Anne, and David Sanders Dooley and his wife, Susan, all of Charlotte; grandchildren, Nancy Lee McLean Alexander and her husband, John; Rebecca McLean Robinette and her husband, Justin; Anne Howard Wright and her husband, Coleman; Catherine Dooley Anderson and her husband, McFadyen; Elizabeth Dooley Stamper and her husband, Brooks; Helen Dooley; Caroline Dooley; and Laura Dooley; and six beautiful great-grandchildren whom she loved deeply.

A service celebrating Nancy's life will be held at 2:30PM on Monday, October 26th, 2026, at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte. A visitation with the family will follow in All Saints Hall.

The family extends special thanks to Nancy's caregivers, Inga, Felicia, and Rob, whom she loved dearly. The family is eternally grateful for their love and care.

Memorials may be made in Nancy's memory to the Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, or to the charity of your choice.
