CHARLOTTE - With hearts full of gratitude for a life well lived, we share that David Lee Smith passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at the age of 90. David was the adored husband of Linda Holland Smith, married 66 years, and the beloved father of Terri (George) Hart of Charlotte, North Carolina, Tracey (Brent) Mckee of Laguna Hills, California and Jay (Lauren) Smith of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. We enjoyed and appreciated so much about him, including his playful sense of humor, his tenacious work ethic, and his worshipful awe of God's creation, especially from his back patio in Evergreen, Colorado.

Born March 29, 1936, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, David was the son of the late C.G. and Thelma Smith, and brother to Loyce Anne Morain and the late Karen Kay Smith. His parents owned and operated C.G. Smith Furniture Company in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, where for a period of his growing up years, the family lived in quarters above the furniture showroom. David had a basketball hoop at the end of a long hall in the residence but was restricted from playing during business hours.

A gifted athlete, David played football, basketball and ran track in High School. He attended Oklahoma University on a track scholarship. He joked that he spent as much time as possible playing sports because if he had any free time, his dad had him working in the furniture store.

David graduated from Oklahoma University in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration. David and Linda were married in 1960 and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1962 to open a second C. G. Smith Furniture store. David was a visionary in the furniture business, blessed with a practical business mind combined with creative sensibilities and a love of beauty. He was a true entrepreneur, taking risks to expand his business. In 1975, David became President and later CEO of Homestead House, which eventually operated 21 retail stores across New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, and California. He went on to design and manufacture case goods and upholstery in the Philippines, China and California under the Touchstone label.

David believed in the virtue of hard work and led by example, but equally important to him were his faith, family and friends. He and Linda enjoyed travel and winter vacations in Hawaii. Along the way, he developed a passion for breeding Quarter Horses. This led to countless hours of study and the purchase of ranch land in Washington, Oklahoma where he built a state of the art stable and a home for his parents. This pursuit provided years of learning and enjoyment for the entire family, especially his father. One of David and Linda's greatest pleasures was entertaining family and friends in their home in Evergreen, Colorado. Their growing family often filled the house and it was frequently the location for Bible study groups, Evergreen Fellowship Sunday services, fundraisers, luncheons and Christmas parties. At large gatherings, David could often be found having long conversations with one guest. Alexander Island in Mooresville, North Carolina, where they enjoyed life on Lake Norman, became their home in 2021.

David was blessed by eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren: Ryan Hart, Blake Smith, Jared Hart (Ashley), Zach Hart (Terry) and their daughter, Camille, Sloane Hawes (Derek) and their children Laney and Crew, Evan McKee (Maira) and their children Callan and Sophie, Kendall Smith and her son Rylee, Rachel Rizik (Nick), Madelyn Hakanson (Jordon) and their children, Hudson, Haley and Hayden, Isabella Smith, and Wilson Smith.

The family will gather in Vail, Colorado for a Celebration of David's Life.
