Sarah “Ann” McColman Copeland

March 16, 2025

CHARLOTTE –

Sarah “Ann” McColman Copeland

Ann Copeland passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, at 91 years of age.

Ann grew up in Gibson, NC, the only child of Lee and Sarah McColman.  She attended St. Mary’s College and completed her degree at Stratford College in Danville, VA.  While working in Danville after graduation, she met her husband Jack on a blind date, and they were married in 1958.  They settled in Charlotte in 1961 and spent 57 years together before Jack’s death in 2015.

Ann was a wonderful cook, with her own catering business for a few years, but she was mostly a stay-at-home mom.  She made her girls’ school lunches every day and cooked homemade meals for her family every night.  She was particularly known for her sourdough bread, lovingly called “Nanna bread.”   She volunteered for just about everything her girls were involved in and spent countless hours helping her church, her girls’ schools and various community organizations.

Much of her life was spent at the beach and she enjoyed playing tennis.  She was a member of the Ownbey Sunday School class at Myers Park United Methodist Church, and Charlotte Country Club.

Ann is survived by her three daughters:  Allison Williams of Charlotte, NC, Sarah Lee Beck and her husband Mark of Charleston, SC, and Letitia Grossman and her husband David of Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters – Taylor Williams, his wife, Liz, and their daughters Mary Copeland and Margaret of Winston-Salem, NC, Laurin Williams of Hamilton, NY, Eliza Williams of Charlotte, NC, Lily Memmel and her husband Reid of West Jefferson, NC, David Beck and his wife Allegra Forbes of Rome, Italy, Leo Beck of Boulder, CO, Margaret Grossman of Charlotte, NC, and Sarah Grossman of Atlanta, GA.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law Anne Copeland of Fieldale, VA, her brother-in-law Robert Copeland of Springfield, MA and her first cousin Sara Jane Pate and her husband Dan of Southern Pines, NC, and their family.  She was predeceased by her granddaughter Anna Beck.

The family would like to thank everyone at Southminster for their years of care for both Ann and Jack.

A service to celebrate Ann’s life will be private. Donations in her memory can be made to Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204 (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
