Mary Sue Calhoun Montague

Mary Sue Calhoun Montague died February 5, 2019 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Aldersgate in Charlotte. She was born on August 7, 1930 in Brewton, Alabama to the late The Reverend Doctor William Fletcher Calhoun and Sally Ruth Eckford Calhoun. The daughter of a Methodist minister, she lived in Mobile, Montgomery, Selma and Dothan, Alabama, graduating in 1948 from Parrish High School in Selma. In 1952 she graduated from Huntingdon College, where she served as secretary of the student body and president of her dormitory.

Following graduation, she worked as a social worker in Birmingham, AL where she met her future husband and love of her life, Edgar Burwell Montague, Jr., whom she married August 18, 1956. They moved to Charlotte, NC shortly thereafter.

She was a long-time member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder, a Stephens Minister, taught Sunday School and served on many committees. She was also involved with the Charlotte Speech & Hearing Auxiliary, The Charity League, and served as PTA President at Carmel Junior High School. She was a board member of Friends of the Library of Queens, the Friendship Force and she volunteered with many Charlotte charities including Crisis Assistance Ministry and Habitat for Humanity. An avid tennis player, Sue played in several organized leagues in Charlotte, including Carmel Country Club and with close friends in the Thursday Night Tennis group (aka TNT).  She also loved playing bridge, gardening, and reading, especially with her several book clubs.   In 2009 she moved to Sharon Towers where she enjoyed many new friendships. Sue had many interests and activities, but what she loved most was spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ed, her brother William Fletcher Calhoun, Jr., her sister, Louise Calhoun Duffey, brother-in-law, Bishop Paul A. Duffey and her grandson Edgar Eubank (Banks) Montague. Surviving are her son, Edgar Burwell (Monty) Montague III, (Kathryn Cook) of Charlotte, NC, daughter, Mary Ashley Montague (William Yoder) of Raleigh, NC, granddaughters Nancy Lea Montague of Mt Pleasant, SC and Vanessa Yoder Montague of Raleigh, NC, brothers Dudley Eckford Calhoun of Atlanta, GA and Richard Fletcher Calhoun of Troy, AL, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and friends. The family expresses their deep gratitude to all the friends, Sharon Towers and Hospice staff and other caregivers who have provided tremendous support over the years, and especially in the past few months.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 3:00 PM.  Memorial donations may be given to Trinity Presbyterian Church, Sharon Towers Residents’ Assistance Fund, and/or Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte Region.
