Suzanne L. Anderson

September 1, 2018

CHARLOTTE – Suzanne L. Anderson, 81, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Suzanne Walling Wyckoff, to John Warren Wyckoff and Irene Nora Yerger in Newport News, VA on September 6, 1936. Her father was an engineer, her mother a church organist. Her father, John Wyckoff, died when she was just four years old. She spent most of her childhood in Hampton, VA, Easton, PA, and finally Hempstead, NY, where her mother remarried. Suzanne was adopted by her stepfather, Arthur R. Lillicrapp.

Born into a very musical family, Suzanne had a deep appreciation for classical music. She was a gifted musician, playing the oboe at a young age, and once performed at Carnegie Hall. She attended Russell Sage College, in Troy, NY and graduated from Columbia University Nursing School in New York City, where she met her husband, Richard, a medical student. Following graduation, Suzanne worked as a nurse at Babies Hospital and then for the Visiting Nurse Service. After living in New York City and New Haven CT, the couple moved to Birmingham, AL where her husband was an associate professor at the University of Alabama. Suzanne was active with the Faculty Wives’ Club and Canterbury Church. The couple moved to Charlotte in 1978 when her husband entered private medical practice; she served on the Board of the Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment.

Suzanne was child-like in the very best sense of the word – open and transparent of feelings, trusting, and honest. “Except as you become like little children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven,” – this quality in Suzanne was no act, but part of her very nature, a trait that made being in her presence magical. She will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, selfless spirit, and angelic smile. Children and grandchildren were the great passion of her life.

Suzanne is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard, and two sons: John Raymond Anderson (Beth) of Charlotte, NC, and Stephen Arthur Anderson (Amy) of Fort Mill, SC, and three wonderful grandchildren; Molly Greer Anderson, Rachel Grace Anderson, and Ian Arthur Anderson and her beloved brother, Rev. Arthur R. Lillicrapp of Sacramento, CA.

A member of the Myers Park United Methodist Church and the Wesley Class, Suzanne wished to express her deep appreciation to the many church members for their kindness and generosity during her illness, especially to June Wise, Susan Mobley, and the entire care team. The family also extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many fine doctors and nurses at Carolinas Medical Center who cared for her over the years, especially Dr. Peter Turk, Dr. Daniel Howard, Dr. Al Hudson, Dr. Gary Frenette, Dr. John Holshouser, and to Dr. Julie Fisher and Cathy Hester, RN of the Levine Cancer Institute.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on September 27, 2018 at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Myers Park United Methodist Church, Carolinas Medical Center or to the Levine Cancer Institute.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
