Ray Dan Stout

CHARLOTTE - Ray Dan Stout, husband, father, grandfather, and friend died peacefully on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. He was born March 17, 1927 in Avery County, NC to Tom and Anna Stout one of eight children.

Ray was preceded in death by his precious wife of 64 years, Mary Lee Stout and three brothers, Bob Stout, Jack Stout, Allen Stout, and two sisters, Helen Weatherman and Ruby Cressman. He is survived by son, Raymond D. Stout and wife, Shelley, of Denver, NC; daughters, Barbara Eaton and husband, Pat, of Sherrills Ford, NC, and Freda White and husband, James, of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Chad Stout and wife, Amy, of Katy, TX, Emily Stiven and husband, Alan, of Denver, NC, Audra Barbour of Mooresville, NC, Dustin White and wife, Meleah, of Matthews, NC and Russell White and fiancé, Ashley Sharpe, of Mount Holly, NC; along with six great-grandchildren, Sylvia Stout, Alan and Nicholas Stiven, Hunter, Hannah, and Zachary Barbour. He is survived by sister, Mabel Harvey of Newland, NC and brother, Fred Stout of Newland, NC, along with many nieces and nephews.

In 1945, Ray enlisted in the Navy as he graduated from Crossnore High School. While he served proudly in the US Navy in WWII, he was assigned to the USS Carlson destroyer DE-9 escorting US War ships to Tokyo Bay, Japan.

Ray was an active member of Assurance United Methodist Church in Huntersville, NC. He taught Sunday School for his class “The Young at Heart” for a number of years. He loved his family and grandchildren dearly. Ray was widely known for his wonderful sense of humor and his rabbit hunting. The hunters referred to him as "Ray D”.

“Ray D” was an avid outdoors sportsman. Such events included many consecutive years fishing on Cape Lookout, NC. Along with raising and training and hunting with his beloved Beagles, Ray truly loved to be outdoors. Serving as a past President of Mecklenburg Wildlife, he showed his enthusiasm of preserving wildlife.

A funeral service to celebrate Ray’s life will be held on Thursday at 3:00 PM at Assurance United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM prior to the service. Graveside services will be Friday, April 13, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Pyatte Family Cemetery in Newland, NC.

    Ray D was my friend and one of the finest people that I have ever known. He was a Christian man who set a great example for those around him. He liked to hunt and fish. I was fortunate enough to spend countless days hunting with him over the years. He was an extraordinary man and I will miss him. My condolences.
