Betty W. Estes, 96, died Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at Pruitt Health Care in Ridgeway, SC. She had been living with her daughter for the past several years in Winnsboro, SC. Betty was born in Springfield, Illinois, daughter of the late Charles Bishop Wunderlich and Martha Janggen Wunderlich, one of five children.

Betty moved to Kentucky with her family during the Depression. She attended the University of Louisville where she met the love of her life, James Tyler Estes. They married in 1941 during war time and all three of their children were born in Louisville. The family moved to Charlotte in 1955 and made it their permanent home.

Never drawing attention to herself, Betty spent a lifetime serving others and, in so doing, she created special memories for her family and friends. She began a Sunday School class for special children at First Baptist Church and faithfully taught the class for more than thirty years. In the 1960s she volunteered for the Hornet’s Nest Girl Scout Council, running the cookie sales with her friend, Helen Sanders, for more than ten years. She also spent many years teaching in an adult literacy program.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James Tyler Estes. She is survived by her children, James Tyler Estes, Jr., and his wife, Brett, of Kailua, Hawaii, Richard Alan Estes and his wife, Nancy, of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Patricia Lynne Estes of Winnsboro, South Carolina; grandchildren, Stefanie Lynne Estes, Sara Estes Filarowicz and her husband, John, Emily Estes Eargle and her husband, Bryan, Hope Tyler Coleman, George Franklin Coleman IV, and John Estes Coleman; and one much anticipated great-grandchild, Grace Hannon Filarowicz; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at First Baptist Church of Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be private in Sharon Memorial Park.
