John Southall Sumner, Jr., 70, of Charlotte, NC died Friday, January 15, 2016, at Sharon Towers Retirement Community after a courageous battle with cancer. The son of John and Frances Sumner, Mr. Sumner was born in Rocky Mount and grew up in Charlotte. John was a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Georgia State University. When not working, John enjoyed many rounds of golf and rooting for his Tar Heels. He spent countless hours enjoying the company of his many friends and family, and cheering the grandkids on from the sidelines. John is survived by his wife, Mary; three children, Hall Sumner and his wife, Amy of Beaufort, SC; Vince Sumner and his wife, Amy of Charlotte, and Elizabeth Chambers of Washington, DC; five grandchildren, Mary Claire, Lillian, Jack, Mabry and Ainsley; two brothers, Thom Sumner and his wife, Sarah of Charlotte and James Sumner and his wife, Mel of Simpsonville, SC; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Rd, Charlotte, NC with a reception following for all friends and family in Jubilee Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or Myers Park United Methodist Church, Jubilee Fund, 1501 Queens Rd, Charlotte, NC 28207. The family would like to express special thanks to everyone at Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, Levine Cancer Institute, and Sharon Towers Retirement Community for their love and support through this entire journey.
