Charles Bobo Hughston

Charles Bobo Hughston, Sr. (Charlie), 89, passed away at home on July 14. He was born on June 16, 1927 in Spartanburg, SC, the son of John Wade Hughston and Mary Bobo Hughston.

Upon graduation from Spartanburg High School, he attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC, and then served in the army until 1946, after which he went to UNC-Chapel Hill, graduating in 1948. He then attended The Columbia School of Business in New York City.

Charlie married Elizabeth, his childhood sweetheart on June 25, 1949 and they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. They were blessed with four sons.

He worked as an assistant store manager for S. H. Kress Co. in New York City and Summit, New Jersey. In 1951, he and his wife moved to Charlotte in which he soon joined the Union National Bank which became the First Union National Bank where he worked for 32 years until his retirement.

A member of First Baptist Church, Charlotte, for 64 years, Charlie served for many years as a deacon and was Chairman of Deacons at one time. He was a faithful member of the Smith Sunday School class.

Preceding him in death are his son, Phil, his mother and father, a brother, John, and sister, Louise Oettinger.

Charlie is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Lib), and sons Chuck and his wife Debbie, of Charlotte, Don and his wife Stella, of London England, Dave and his wife Marilyn, of Roxboro NC and grandchildren Phil Hughston and wife Monica, Laura Cardner and husband Shawn, Michael Hughston, Matt Hughston and his wife Hannah, two step-grandchildren Ignacio Jimenez Acquarone and Isabel Jimenez Acquarone and husband David, four great grandchildren, Camila Ilardia Jimenez, Zara Garrido Jimenez, Sabrina Hughston and Melody Hughston, and niece Beth Carter and nephew Wade Hughston.

A memorial service will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, July 16, 2016 in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 301 South Davidson Street. The family will receive visitors at 12:00 noon in the foyer.
