Dorothy Burton Tobias

CHARLOTTE – Dorothy Burton Tobias, 88, died Friday, February 23, 2024, at TerraBella Little Avenue in Charlotte, NC. A native of Monetta, SC, she lived a long and full life.

Dottie received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Winthrop University, (Winthrop College, then), and a Master of Education from University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
An elementary music educator, Dottie was employed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system for over 30 years. She specialized in the Orff method of music education and was past
president of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.

Dottie was a long-time member of the chancel choir at Myers Park United Methodist Church, and a proud member of the Ownbey Sunday School class. She was very active in the Charlotte arts and theater community over the years and performed on stages at Theater Charlotte, Old Courthouse Theater, Mint Museum Golden Circle Theater, and Spirit Square.

Dottie is survived by her three children, William “Billy” Raymond Tobias, Jr., Dorothy “Sissy” Tobias Yeley, Lawrence “Larry” Hodge Tobias and their spouses; six grandchildren and her sister, Mary Burton Sherard. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph Nathaniel Burton, Sr. and Dorothy Bryan Burton; her husband, William Raymond Tobias, Sr. and her brother, Joseph Nathaniel Burton, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Myers Park United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Jubilee Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Dottie to The Walter Herbert Ball Endowment Fund for Music at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.
