Jill Baugh Roberts

December 31, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Jill Baugh Roberts, 87, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 31, 2023, at The Stewart Health Center at The Cypress of Charlotte.  She was born on July 8, 1936 in Charlotte, NC, daughter of the late Philip Jackson and Francis Jones Baugh.   Jill attended Myers Park Grammer School, Alexander Graham Junior High, and graduated from The Stewart Hall School in Staunton, Virginia.  She attended Duke University where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority.

Jill was married to John Alexander Roberts in 1956 and shortly thereafter drove in an old Ford to The Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas, where John was stationed for basic flight training.  In 1958 they moved to the Air Force Base in Pensacola, Florida.  She moved back to Charlotte in 1959 when John was transferred with the Air Force to Keflavik, Iceland.

Jill lived her entire adult life in Charlotte as a devoted single mother, and a keeper of numerous pets large and small, including a large pony in her Foxcroft backyard.  She loved her garden and flowers and especially her Gardenias.  Jill was dearly loved by all that knew her and she was a loyal and caring friend to many.  She could always be counted on if someone was sick or in need.  Jill was quietly smart and could hold her own with anyone on world news, current events, or a friendly game of Trivia.  Jill loved beach music and was known to boogie on the spot if one of her favorite tunes happened to be playing.  She was particularly proud of her grandchildren for their academic and professional achievements.

Jill was a true beauty inside and out and always carried herself with great poise and grace. She had a subtle but keen sense of humor and constantly had a special “twinkle” in her eye.  Jill also had a hidden fortitude and handled adverse situations with supreme inner strength.  She always found her way to the bright side and made the best of any tough situation.

Jill was a longtime member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, The Charlotte Country Club, The Junior League of Charlotte, The Garden Club, The German Club, and her special Friday night dinner club.

Jill loved the beach and spent many long weekends at her Litchfield Beach villa. She dated her beloved friend, Hugh M. Efird (d. 2011), for more than 25 years.

Jill is survived by her two children, John Alexander Roberts, Jr. and his wife, Margot and Elizabeth Baugh Roberts Snelling and her husband, Vince; three grandchildren, Carson Paschal and her husband, Mark, Caroline Pharr and her husband, David and Johnny Roberts and his wife, Maddie, and five great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband (divorced) John Alexander Roberts, and her brother, Philip Jackson Baugh.

The family will be forever grateful to the wonderful staff, nurses, and caregivers at The Stewart Health Center that looked after and lovingly cared for Jill in her last few years.

Services for Jill will be private.  Jill will be inurned at the Baugh Family mausoleum in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be offered in memory of Jill to Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC 28207 or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Johnny and Libby, I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. However I know my Mom is thrilled to have her together in heaven. You do know that they were best of friends back in the day. I am hoping that you will allow me to see you when you are in town for the service. Oddly enough I have been looking for your mom recently. I had driven by the house and saw that the house was no longer there. I also had not seen Jill in a while at Harris Teeter.

Please feel free to call me at 704-617-3333
