Marion Elizabeth Walker McGaha

CHARLOTTE - Marion Elizabeth Walker McGaha entered her heavenly home on Thursday Dec 28, 2023. She was born April 27,1929 in Union, SC, daughter of Charlie Stough Walker and Jessie Pinson Walker. She was predeceased by her eight brothers and sisters.  Marion was also preceded in death by her husband, George Vernon McGaha.

Marion is survived by her children, Marsha McGaha Sherrill (Bo), Don McGaha, (Dianne), and Mitzi McGaha Mayhew (Chris); two granddaughters, Selwyn Sherrill Bogdziewicz, (Billy) and Sarah Sherrill Adams, (Greg), one great-granddaughter: Sylvie Elizabeth Bogdziewicz.  Marion is also survived by one step-granddaughter, Denise Black, and three step great-grandsons, Taylor, Chance, and Justice Black.

Marion graduated from Union High School in 1946, and from Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. She worked there as a Registered Nurse until 1953, when she met and married George. In 1954 they moved to Charlotte where they raised their family. Marion was very active in her church, Pritchard Memorial Baptist, serving as Director of the Media Center for many years, Sunday School, and WMU.  She and George also served on several mission trips overseas with the church. Marion and George were officers in the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, attending meetings across the U.S. They made many friends there and enjoyed collecting many clocks.  Marion also served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross for many years and was featured in a documentary about the History of The Red Cross In Action, in 1979, filmed here by WSOC TV.

Marion was active in the Spartanburg Nurses Alumni Association. She and her friend from Nursing School, Jeanne Tucker, were pioneers in State Library Ministry of the NC Baptist Sunday School Board, leading conferences all over NC, SC, and VA. They also enjoyed working with the Piedmont Historical Society in Spartanburg, traveling to dozens of cemeteries throughout Spartanburg County, recording information.

When Marion moved to Sharon Towers, she made many dear friends there and enjoyed sharing the Love of Christ to friends and staff.

A service to celebrate Marion’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. The burial will be private in Sharon Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203, or to the Provision Financial Resources. Include ‘The George V.
