Robert “Rob” Bond Byrd, II

September 7, 1955 – October 9, 2023

Charlotte, North Carolina – Rob Byrd’s legacy is reflected in this fundamental fact about his life: In the 45 years he spent in accounting, he did his best never to bring work home. During the day, he gave everything he had to helping clients. The rest of his time was devoted to his family, and to the passions that brought him joy.

The oldest of Robert and Joyce Byrd’s three children, Rob grew up in Morganton in the N.C. foothills. He graduated from Morganton High School, then earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill. His Chapel Hill roots – he was born there when his parents were in graduate school – propelled Rob’s passion for the Tar Heels, especially basketball. This explains his 11 trips to Final Fours. In his own words, Rob was a “Tar Heel born and bred.”

Rob earned a Master of Accounting degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Rob began his career as a CPA with the Arthur Andersen accounting firm in Atlanta in 1979, then moved to the company’s Charlotte office in 1980. In 2002, the Arthur Andersen Carolinas offices merged with another accounting firm, Grant Thornton. Rob was proud to have engineered that transition, along with other Arthur Andersen Carolinas partners. He enjoyed serving publicly and privately owned companies, nonprofits, and individuals. He worked with some clients for several decades, appreciating the rewards of building and sustaining relationships. Such was his enthusiasm for the work, Rob continued as a tax consultant when he retired as a partner in 2018.

He displayed that same devotion in serving the community. The Byrds were longtime members of Myers Park United Methodist Church. Organizations to which Rob gave his time and energy included Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, Mint Museum of Art, Carolinas Palliative Care and Hospice Group, and United Methodist Foundation of Western North Carolina. He served on the board of the Tax Center at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. He was also a member of several Kiwanis Clubs for more than 40 years, most recently the Kiwanis Club of Charlotte where he was the Chairman of the Foundation Committee which oversees the operation of the Charlotte Kiwanis Foundation.

For relaxation, Rob and Shirley relished family beach trips to their home in Litchfield, S.C. With friends, Rob was fortunate enough to have attended The Masters for 30-plus years, several U.S. Opens, the 2012 Ryder Cup, and baseball games at Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, among others.

Rob and Shirley owned a summer residence for the last 15 years in the N.C. mountains, most recently as a member of Linville Ridge Country Club. There, Rob learned the game of six-wicket croquet and that became his primary summer activity. He reached the skill level of playing in the top flight of tournaments throughout the Southeast including Florida. He particularly enjoyed his time at tournaments in Pinehurst. His passion for competitive croquet progressed to serving a term as corporate secretary for the U.S. Croquet Association. Rob embraced the last five years of his life after he retired and spent more time with Shirley, his children and grandchildren, croquet, traveling, and reading.

Rob lived a wonderful life and has left an incredible legacy for what it means to be a servant leader. A heart attack took him unexpectedly on October 9, 2023. He will be missed by many.

Rob is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Shirley, of Charlotte; their two daughters – Kathryn Byrd and her husband, James Hiller, of Raleigh, and Caroline Hornburg and her husband, Dave, of Christiansburg, V.A.; two grandchildren – Rebecca Joy and Paul Robert Hornburg; his two siblings – Dixon Byrd and his wife, Jeanie, and Sara Lou Succop and her husband, Ben, all of whom live in the Byrds’ hometown of Morganton, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Rob’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28207. The service will be livestreamed through www.myersparkumc.org. The family will receive friends in Jubilee Hall following the service.

    Dear Shirley,

I am so sorry to hear of Rob's passing. I got to know Rob through an introduction at the Ram's Club. We shared his season tickets for basketball and talked about our wins and commiserated about our teams losses. Mr. Byrd was very nice to me even though I initially was a stranger, yet fellow Tar Heel. Mr. Byrd will be missed at the UNC games. He was a very nice man.

I was so saddened & to hear of Rob's passing. I mostly enjoyed spending the day helping in the packing up process of Dave & Caroline from Purdue to Virginia Tech. Rob was so kind & funny while packing up all the stuff! My thoughts & prayers for your whole family.

    Dear Shirley,
Seeing Rob's obituary was shocking, but I must say very informative and the review of a life well-lived. He and I met on the croquet courts at either Bald Head or my home club in Pinehurst; you may have been along for the fun of it. And, of course, you and I saw each other on croquet outings over the years. Rob went on to become a very good player and, while he took the game quite seriously, he remained a gentleman. That cannot be said of all players! My husband died in 2012, and having been a wife for so long my identity was fragile, but being called a widow gave me chills. I hope you navigate the future among supportive friends and family. Time does heal, but how long should be whatever you are comfortable with. Eleven years later, I still talk to Andrew, especially when I see something I know would have made him laugh. If I could have found a home address for you, I would not have put all this in an email --- but please know that it comes from my heart. Sincerely, Mary-Stewart Regensburg

    Dear Shirley, Kat, and Caroline,

We are shocked and saddened that you lost Rob. He was a great uncle, a great-uncle, and of course a wonderful father and husband. I remember running into him at a restaurant in downtown Charlotte when I was working in town there for a few weeks. We had a great talk and drink and he made me feel like the most important person there. We were all luck to know him and are glad you found him at UT, Shirley. I also remember being a junior usher in your wedding, which was quite the event. Take care of yourselves.

    Much Love,
    Ross and Karen

Dearest Dixon, Sara Lou and Shirley,
Sending you all my sincere condolences in the loss of Rob. My heart is broken…Having grown up together, “Robbie” and I shared so much. We were in band and many of the same classes all through school, shared a fantastic group of friends in our “never a dull moment” neighborhood and reveled in our “dyed in the wool” love for Tar Heel basketball! Our fathers grew up together, our mothers played bridge and Rob and I were born just a few months apart in Chapel Hill….
With our Morganton High School Class of 1973 50th year reunion coming up in just a few weeks, Rob will be truly missed by all. He had already shared his excitement for the events of our Reunion Weekend and offered to help wherever necessary.
Holding each of you and the family in my heart with prayers and love,
    Ruth Riddle Jones

    Brother Rob a/k/a Big Byrd,

We miss you and love you. A true gentleman. With a smile lurking, Rob kept the fraternity's books pristine and found the funds for socializing inculcating his penchant to host. Smart and approachable. Good bridge player. Never a kill joy and quite responsible. His dad's namesake whom he honored and hosted me in Morganton to waterski Labor Day Lake James 1977. Loved Shirley, his two daughters and Carolina! Came to my Florida home to see the Heels in Jacksonville. Organized, dependable and a good heart. I pray God's Holy Spirit be upon his family now and in the months to come. Rob demonstrated an honorable life well lived and who helped others.

With fond memories and hope we reunite Brother, I send my condolences and loss of a dear friend in this transitory life,
    Jim Middleton
