James Randolph Jamison, Jr.

CHARLOTTE – James "Jim" Randolph Jamison, Jr., 98, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023.  He was born on July 20, 1925, in Charlotte, NC, to the late James Randolph Jamison and Ruby Kelly Jamison.

Jim was a devoted husband of 77 years to the love of his life, Peggy, and a loving father to his three daughters.  He was a hardworking and intelligent man who constantly pursued higher education and continued training for his career.

Jim's educational journey began at Wilmore Elementary and A.G. Middle School.  He then attended and graduated from Berryhill High School.  Later he furthered his studies at Central Piedmont Community College, where he received an associate degree in Fire Science Technology.  Jim also studied Psychology at Queens College from 1962-1963 and attended prestigious institutions such as the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD, the Municipal Fire Administration in Raleigh, NC, and Municipal Administration at UNC Chapel Hill.

Jim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1943-1946 and the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1948-1950.  He received numerous awards for his service, including the Presidential Unit Citation and Purple Heart for his heroic actions during the Guam, Marianas Islands Campaign in 1944.  Following his military service, he returned home to Charlotte, NC and married Peggy Youngblood.

Jim embarked on a distinguished career with the Charlotte Fire Department, serving from 1949 to 1981.  Throughout his career, he held various positions, including firefighter, engineer, captain, deputy chief, and assistant chief.  Jim's dedication and bravery were recognized with accolades such as the Heroic Fireman Award and the Charlotte City Council Citation.  His commitment to education also led him to become an instructor in Fire Science Technology, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, and First Aid. During his career he was a member of many professional and civic organizations such as Sharon Civitan Club, Heart Association of Charlotte Mecklenburg, and The Scottish Rite, Carolina Consistory.

In addition to his career with the Charlotte Fire Department, Jim served as the Fire Marshal for the York County Fire Department.

Jim found solace and community in his faith and worshiped at Wilmore Presbyterian of Charlotte, Grace Methodist Church of Charlotte, and Broad Street Methodist of Statesville, NC.

Outside of his professional life, Jim had a variety of hobbies.  He enjoyed collecting and restoring fire relics, woodworking, restoring and refinishing furniture, and was an avid reader and book collector.  Jim also loved swimming, boating, and traveling.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Sharon Memorial Park.

Jim Jamison will be remembered as a dedicated family man, a respected firefighter, and a lifelong learner. His legacy of service and love will forever remain in the hearts of his wife, Peggy Jamison; his daughters, Jane Brown, Nancy Currier and her husband, David Currier, Leslie Brookshire and her husband, Joe Brookshire, his five grandchildren and their spouses: Tom Currier (Sheldon), Lauren Oliphant (Ryan), Matt Maynard (Kathryn), Kate Brandis (Darwin), Alex Brookshire (Brittany).  Also surviving are his nine great-grandchildren, Bladen Currier, Renie Currier, Mary Elliot Currier, Bo Oliphant, Addie Oliphant, Liam Brandis, Jamison Brookshire, and Jace Brookshire.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James Randolph Jamison and Ruby Kelly Jamison; brother, John Watts Jamison and son-in-law, Jeffrey Biggers.
