Roy Edward Hunter

September 14, 2023

Roy Edward Hunter, age 62, of Lake Norman/ Debordieu/ Bluffton, unexpectedly passed this Thursday September 14 2023. He was one of the most interesting, exciting, loving and generous individuals any of us could have known. None of us will ever know the true extent of his love and generosity.

A true Charlotte native, Roy was born in the city on December 20, 1960 to Chick and Liz Hunter.  Educated at Myers Park High School and NC State and followed his daughter to Clemson for 4 years, where he was the honorary “Godfather” to the Sigma Nu fraternity. A lifetime lover of the game, Roy was an All American and two time All ACC golfer. He continued to play professional golf on multiple tours, including a stint on the Australian Tour where he made 9 of 12 cuts. He went on to have a career as a PGA professional starting at Gaston Country Club, he won the North Carolina Open in 1989 and countless smaller tourneys, Roy was Carolinas Section teacher of the year in 1995, he enjoyed and had great success teaching junior golfers. He cherished his time with his family, especially traveling overseas with Jordan and Annese. After his morning Quordle and coffee, Roy was usually found walking on the beach or riding in the golf cart with his best friend, Olliedog. He had the gift of gab and never met a stranger, sharing his light with a generosity that endeared him to his friends. His unique style and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Roy is survived by his children Jordan Bailey Hunter, Annese Lindler Hunter, their mother Gina and her husband Kelly Rhodes; brother Charles Richard Hunter III; sister in law Minda; niece, Carter Elisabeth Hunter, nephew, Jacob Charles Hunter; his loving girlfriend, Jory Savage, and his best friend Oliver Hunter.
