Joan Freeman

September 5, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Joan Freeman, 90, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, just six days before her 91st birthday.  Although a failing heart took her away from this world, it was her loving heart that left us remembering her kindness, selflessness, intelligence, and a remarkable sense of humor.  She passed surrounded by her loved ones who will continue to honor the way Joan always did it, (as both Joan and Frank would say) “she did it her way.”

Upon graduation from New Rochelle High School, Joan married and moved to Rye Brook, NY where she raised her family.  Joan had a passion for cooking, tackling recipes from Gourmet Magazine, only buying her produce from local farms and meats from her trusted butcher.  When Joan went back to work in 1971, she started in the personnel department for Avon Products in Rye, NY and moved up to the position of Executive Assistant to the Chairman of Tiffany & Co., Bill Chaney, in New York City where she stayed until retirement, thirty years later.

Joan was a true New Yorker.  She loved the museums, attending Broadway shows with her friends, and her favorite was walking to the Union Square farmers market.  Exercise was a big passion of Joan’s and she especially loved yoga.  She had even been known to do a handstand one Christmas morning in her eighties.  The simplest pleasures always brought joy to Joan -- a great oyster, a spicy Bloody Mary, a good book or a glass of red wine (right at 5:00!).

Joan was a truly wonderful lady whose impact will be forever felt by her family and friends who admired and loved her dearly.  Her ability to sacrifice, provide, support, forgive and love will be forever engrained in all who knew her.

Joan is survived by her three sons, John Freeman, George Freeman and Scott Freeman and his wife, Melanie; grandchildren, Adam, Jeffery, Rosie, Caylen, Graycen, Elle and Jane.  Also surviving are her three great-grandchildren, Henry, Parker and Julia.

Services will be private.

Memorials may be offered in memory of Joan to Central Park Conservancy, 717 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10022.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
