Mary Knight D'Oyley Baucom

August 5, 2023

Mary Knight D’Oyley Baucom, age 80, passed away with her sons by her side on August 5, 2023. Mary was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, at James Walker Memorial Hospital on October 4, 1942 to parents Harry deBohun D’Oyley Jr. and Ajetta Elizabeth Fell and had a younger brother, Harry deBohun D’Oyley III. When Mary was young, her family moved to Concord, North Carolina where Mary would spend her childhood and teenage years. She attended Concord High School, where she was a letter girl, and was named Miss Mount Pleasant. While in Concord, she met the love of her life, the late Dr. Jim P. Baucom. After high school, she attended and graduated from Evans Business School.

Mary and Jim married in Concord on August 13, 1961, and they moved to Chapel Hill where he attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Dentistry and she worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. When Jim joined the Naval Dental Corps, they were stationed in Newport, Rhode Island, and welcomed their first son, Jeff, in 1966. Mary and Jim made their permanent home in Charlotte, North Carolina where Jim opened his dental practice and they raised their growing family welcoming their second son, Chris, in 1968 and their third son, Brian in 1978.

Mary’s greatest passion was her family, and she loved to cook and take care of others. She was continually improving upon recipes from her many cookbooks and loved having all her sons’ friends over for meals. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with friends and family or curled up with a good book. Mary was an active member in the neighborhood Garden Club, volunteered her time at Charlotte Country Day School where all three sons attended, and was an avid tennis player who played in the Queen City Tennis League. Mary and Jim loved to travel and took many trips abroad and across the United States with the North Carolina Dental Society and many countries abroad. Above all, she loved the family’s annual trips to Staniel Cay in the Bahamas where they vacationed with her brother, Harry, and his family.

Preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Mary is survived by her sons, Jeffrey David Baucom, Christopher Preston Baucom, and James Brian Baucom of Charlotte; her brother Harry deBohun D’Oyley III and sister-in-law Kathy Marie D’Oyley of Coconut Creek, Florida; nieces Danielle Marie D’Oyley of Washington, DC, and Lisa Ajetta Zughni of Seattle, Washington; and grandchildren Erika Hailey Wilner and Grant Everette Baucom of Chicago, Illinois.

Mary touched so many lives in a positive way and will be immensely missed by her family and friends. The service is scheduled for Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church.
