Robert Eddie Thore

July 6, 2023

Robert “Ed” Eddie Thore, age 78, passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2023, in Charlotte, NC.

A New Year’s baby, Ed was born on January 1, 1945, in Mt. Airy, NC.  Ed grew up in Charlotte, graduating from Garinger High School.  He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from his beloved Duke University, receiving the Angier B. Duke Scholarship.  Ed also earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia.  After graduating from Duke, Ed joined the United States Air Force. During his time in the Air Force, Ed was posted in many locations around the United States and the world.  His favorite place of residence was the Island of Crete off the coast of Greece. He retired as a Major after 23 years of serving his country proudly and thankfully.

Following his retirement from military service, Ed lived in Maryland and worked in retail. Eventually he returned to Charlotte and worked for several years in the Bank of America Mortgage Department.  One of Ed’s greatest joys was walking his dog, Pounder, all around their neighborhood in Matthews. Pounder was a faithful companion for many years. These times of exercise gave Ed the opportunity to know and be known by just about everybody on their walking route. He had many friends who loved and cared for him.

Ed was a faithful believer in and servant of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Ed traveled all over the United States and the world participating in many mission trips.  At First Baptist Church in Charlotte, he taught Bible studies for senior adults, sang in the Joyful Sounds Choir, and served on the Missions Committee. In his later years, he attended Woodlawn Baptist Church.

Ed is survived by his brother, Jeffrey Thore, and his wife Gina; his sister-in-law, Cindy Thore; his nieces and nephews, Cameron Peter Thore, Dillard Watson Thore, Allyson Thore Kaylor (James), Willam Andrew Thore (Paola), Ashleigh Thore Carlascio (Chris); and several great-nieces and nephews.  Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Faye Thore, and his brother, Bruce Thore.

Ed will be laid to rest with full military honors at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 27, 2023, at the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex.  A celebration of life service for Ed will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, July 27 at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 4622 Nations Crossing Road, Charlotte, NC.

In honor of Ed, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601, or the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University DUMC 3624, Durham, NC 27710.
