James Chomakos

July 2, 2023

CHARLOTTE – James (Jim) Chomakos passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2023.  He was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 28, 1937 to Constantine (Gus) and Bessie Chomakos.

The first of three boys, Jim worked in his father’s restaurant through high school, graduating from the esteemed Cass Tech High School in Detroit.  After college, Jim started as a branch manager trainee with First Federal of Michigan Savings and Loan, where he was introduced to the love of his life, Gail Bryce, through her mother, Marjorie, who was Jim’s boss at the Bank.

Jim loved his family, his church, all animals (great and small), the Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines (and not necessarily in that order!).  Jim and Gail moved to Charlotte, NC in 2004, to be closer to their daughter, Andrea, where they joined St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church and became very active parishioners.  In 2012, Jim received the Archangel Michael Award which recognizes individuals who exemplify the true Orthodox Christian way of life.  Jim kept the staff in the church office on their toes and in stitches with his quick wit and sense of humor.  He was best known for serving a mean cup of coffee during coffee hour following the Sunday services.  Many in the congregation still miss his specially made brew.

Jim is survived by his wife, Gail Chomakos; daughter, Andrea Chomakos, and her husband, Jason Cox; his brother, Tom Chomakos and his wife, Beth and countless friends.

The family will hold a private service to honor Jim and his life.

Memorials may be offered in memory of Jim to St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, 5108 Kuykendall Road, Charlotte, NC 28270 or the Humane Society of Charlotte, 1348 Parker Drive, Charlotte, NC 28208.

May His Memory Be Eternal.
